What is endometriosis excision surgery? Dr. Bagaria explains.

At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day!

At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms.

Hi, I'm Dr. Madhu Bagaria and I'm an endometriosis excision surgeon in the New York and New Jersey area. I have been asked this question, what is endometriosis excision surgery? Before you go for any surgery, it's important to understand the various terminologies like excision and ablation. When we talk about excision surgery, what we mean is we are going inside your abdomen and we are looking for lesions of the endometriosis, typically in the diaphragm, your liver.

We look around the areas in your small bowels, large bowels, and everywhere in the pelvis as well. We also look at your appendix as well. When we go in, we, when we find a lesion, the goal is to excise it. And when we mean excision, we mean using advanced surgical techniques, using effective electricity, electrosurgery, so that we can go ahead and remove those lesions in its entirety.

This does require advanced training, so that you can do these excisions safely, because... Sometimes these lesions can lie close to the important structures which can be your bowels, your bladder, your ureter. They can be very close to it or they can be embedded in it. So it does require advanced training and to completely resect it.

Sometimes when it is, when endometriosis is very deep and severe and it is invading your important organs like bowels, bladder, ureter, it does need more extensive surgery and requires assistance of surgeons from other fields like colorectal surgeon and neurology surgeon if needed. We also team with them so that we can remove the disease effectively.

Excision surgery is an important surgery because it helps in removing the disease as an entirety and make sure that you have a best outcome and fewer recurrences.
