CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With Christy's (Ariel Bolger) help, Johnny (Paddy Considine) is finally able to let go of his grieving.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
After chronicling various chapters of Irish history in such films as In the Name of the Father and The Field, writer/director Jim Sheridan turns his lens upon his own family's experiences immigrating to the United States in the aptly titled In America. The loosely autobiographical script centers on Johnny (Paddy Considine), a young actor sneaking his wife, Sarah (Samantha Morton), and daughters, Christy and Ariel (real-life sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger, respectively), over the Canadian border in the hopes of jump-starting his career in New York City. They soon find that America is not the land of boundless opportunity, however, as they move into a dank, dilapidated apartment building populated by drug dealers, transients, and thugs. Johnny doesn't snag auditions as easily as he may have hoped, and he and Sarah are forced to take meager jobs after spending their savings on food, rent, and utilities. Still in grief over the untimely death of their toddler son back in Ireland, the couple find their relationship further strained by the pressures of life in the city. Little by little, however, things begin to look up for the fiercely protective family unit, especially when they befriend an eccentric artist neighbor named Mateo (Djimon Hounsou). In America saw its world premiere at the 2002 Toronto International Film Festival and played to enthusiastic crowds at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival before its theatrical release in the fall of that year.

perhaps the greatest film made on the nature of grief & one of the most transcendent experiences I've ever had at the cinema

This movie brings me to tears like no other. The fact that no one knows about it makes me so sad. I've taken 2 film classes in 2 separate schools with different teachers and this movie was part of both curriculums. From a pure filmmaking perspective, this is a masterpiece, nevermind the emotional aspect.

I won't even watch this clip. It makes my eyes hurt just thinking about it. I start to cry just know it's coming up in the film and I can't hep myself. the tears are well earned and the film is so worthy of them. "Say goodbye... " I'm already crying.

Floored me!!!!😢😢😢😢 Not fair, unprepared for something so moving. And I've seen it many times. Grief for any reason is heartbreaking to witness sometimes. This movie is a gem.

When this movie came out Richard Roeper (columnist) wrote in his review, ' go see this.... if you don't love this move, I'll give you your money back '. Gave it look and have recommended it ever since. A gut punch of such wonderful & painful emotions.

The daughter is amazing too! She only got the job because she turned up with her little sister who had already been cast.

It's nice to think that Matteo did look after Frankie until they were all together again

Along with all the contextual subtleties that strengthens it, this is one of the most powerful scenes of all time. And I've watched a lot of movies.

Never fails to to turn my eyes into Niagara Falls. An absolute masterpiece! The acting, the music, the setup, the back-story; everything just fits, feels good and hurts at the same time. I really wish this film was seen more and appreciated more.

Took me many hours over a period of weeks...to search for this movie. Saw it in the early 2000s and could not remember the title!....This particular scene is the reason I wanted to re-live the moment that made me cry then...And I cried again today. But I am delighted to finally know the name of this gem of a movie. Going to watch the movie ASAP. Thanks IMDb!

It's like heroin...can't believe I'm making myself watch this. It's one of the hardest cries I've ever had watching the film. I don't know if I love it or hate it but I do know it was a beautiful movie. And the soundtrack elevates it to a heavenly level.
