I would argue that Russia doesn't have an aircraft carrier, they have a towed aircraft bardge at best.

The biggest Airforce in the world. The US Airforce. The second biggest Airforce in the world. The US Navy.

One thing to note is yes France has only one but it's the only besides the US to have nuclear powered aircraft carrier

We have carrier task forces. That is very different from a boat paddling around by itself.

Well the ubiquity might also have something to do with WW2 which demonstrated just how powerful a carrier group can be.

The Russian one was on fire in a dry dock I heard. Not operational at all.

Yet, the US amphibious assault ships, LHAs, are more capable carriers than many of the single carriers in other countries, but are not counted.

The US has 11 Super Carriers and an additional 9 "light carriers" (e.g. "amphibious assault ship") that can carry an embarked air wing, eventually including the F-35B on all of them.

We will keep 11 Super Carriers in service but will be expanding the number of amphibious assault ships to 11.

Between these two types, the US has the vast majority of the world's naval aviation and nearly half of the world's aircraft carriers.

The reason they are hugely important in the US fleet is because just one will provide mobile air superiority over almost any other country. Just one carrier capability the capability of moving a fleet of aircraft larger than most countries entire airforce. On top of that the aircraft can launch, land, and be maintained without a friendly port in sight. They usually sent out as a support element for any naval detachment. No one soldier wins a war, same goes for ships. Japan learned that the hard way and now we have the Yamato reef

When you consider that an aircraft carrier is basically a ship with a small airport on top *AND* a town large enough to hold both the ship *AND* airport personnel, the sheer economics of building and maintaining such a vast structure naturally means they will be few and far between.

Theyre an incredibly important part. You want to shut a nation up, you send a carrier. Its one the most dangerous things to ever float considering its the only naval ship that can rain its full firepower on literally an location on earth, and it carries a LOT of firepower, up to and including nuclear missiles

Aircraft carriers turned the tide in WW2 in the pacific

Not sure a non-functioning formerly barely seaworthy boat really qualifies. Looking at you, Admiral Kuznetsov.

As an Italian, the funny thing is that the new Trieste class LHD, has more displacement than our flagship aircraft carrier Cavour 😂.
And most likely it would be able to carry more F-35 than the Cavour. So yeah the border between Aircraft carrier and LHD is often blurry

Considering the second largest Air Force in the world is held by the US Navy, I’d say carriers are pretty important

Russia's "aircraft carrier" actually is not classified as an aircraft carrier due to the Montreux Convention

Last I heard about the Russian Carrier was it wasn't going anywhere and about to be scrapped. Of all things it was made in the Ukraine ship yards where all the top people that design ships are Ukrainian. So they are not going to get any spare parts or be able to fix it. Kuznetsov doesn't use conventional bunker oil for the boilers, it runs on a highly-toxic, tar-like substance called Mazut. It is almost exclusively manufactured in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan. It's typically used for larger boilers in producing steam, since the energy value is high. The Kuznetsov boiler and ventilation systems are so bad on that ship, it is surprising that anyone can stay alive below decks as they are filled with smoke from the engine room whenever it was underway. Russia as never been able to put together any kind of a Navy pilot program or manufacture any decent aircraft that can operate off of a carrier.

I feel like it’s worth noting that carriers are force projecting ships. Most nations simply don’t have a need for them. Hence why so little exist around so few nations.
