This week Plant Lovers I almost DIED of excitement as it was the first post-covid sale of the Orchid Species Society of Victoria! This is my local orchid group that specialises in orchid species and has monthly meetings - which are VERY interesting! But....and this MAY have been a contributing factor in my joining...they have quite regular plant sales! And it was PACKED to the gunnels with interesting plants and great growers all happy to share their insights and knowledge on culture tips for the plants they had. So I left with a box full.....lets take a look!
0:00 orchid haul introduction - where do you buy interesting orchids from?
6:31 Habenaria rhodocheila x carnea
8:02 Coelogyne usitana
10:15 Cymbidium maguanense
11:39 Cymbidium wenshanense
12:46 Cymbidium wadae

Who needs photos when you are such a great story teller Mathew! I was hyperventilating right along with you! I would love to go to an Orchid show, but alas, I live in Western Washington State (USA) which is an Orchid wasteland. So I live vicariously through YouTube orchid growers. I look forward to your posts every week!

Oh nice haul. I belong to Hervey Bay orchid society and have learnt so much. They also do raffles in their monthly meetings and I have won a mini vanda and a phalenopsis. I understand your excitement, I am going to a regional orchid show on Saturday 😬😬😬

I have had 13 blooms sequentially so far. Your comment about the zig zag pattern is spot on!

starting spring in Central Canada and this was very inspiring. Also only a few years into growing Orchids but I have enough that I am considering putting a sunroom on my deck to feed my addiction! Thankyou

Such a great haul! Excellent choices. And yes it was mad busy in there, we arrived before opening and the line was already miles long! But so exciting, I was running around like a kid in a sweet shop. Good to know there will be another event in July, maybe I'll see you there.
That coelogyne usitana is just fabulous, can't wait to hear how you go with it in Melbourne. The Habenaria is super cute too, I don't know anything about them so thank you for the discovery!

I purchased a sad-looking Cochleanthes from my local nursery about a month ago and it's perked up and now looking healthy. It is even pushing out spikes now. What I have found out is that it originates from Mexico but it does like it a bit cooler. If you don't have this one you may wish to look into it - apparently they can bloom throughout the year and is fragrant.
As always, thank you for the great videos - love them!

Lucky, lucky, I feel jealous... Looking forward to seeing how they grow and what you can teach us about them. FWIW, your comment about big box stores: Check out Bunnings, they have a new release (maybe it's old news but..) called Designer Orchids - Collector Series. They are advanced seedlings from Queensland that I found on my weekly Orchid rescue, well worth looking out for. Priced at $9.95. Mainly Dendrobium but there is a Odontoglossom - Mystic Maze that captured me as I'd never come across it before and know nothing about it..
I consider them worth the risk in Melbourne as I'm not expecting them to last past winter.
Look forward to next weeks adventure....

I did join a society on your suggestion. Thanks.
FB marketplace not much good here. I was really excited after seeing what you got. But just phals here.
Any luck growing stanhopea down there?
I also think you'd like Dick Smith and Maxillaria for the smells.
