In the concert video called "Black and White Night", when Roy Orbison is singing "Oh, Pretty Woman" and he does the little growl in the middle of the song, it is even better than on the original recording. Plus, the song is jammed out more with help from Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and a bunch of other master musicians. Very much worth a look.

One of those extremely rare artists who sound Better live. Better as he aged.
What music legend. You name the music artist, and they will agree Roy is GOAT.
Even the KING, Elvis Presly was quoted " The Greatest singer to ever grace a stage is Roy Orbison "

If you want to know how dear Roy is to the music world, check out the Black And White concert just to see the world class musicians that make up his stage band, many that could sell out a stadium on their own.

He was on that night and the recording and videography are first class, as he ran through his catalog.

When Roy was recording this song, after a few takes, the producer said can you do that 'mercy' line again? Roy didn't know what he was taking about. Guy says, 'when you're taking about how pretty she is, you say "Mercy!" Roy said, 'I didn't do that?' So, they played it back and Roy does say "Mercy". Roy said, "Oh, I was holding that high note so long, when I finished, I said 'Mercy', because I barely could hold it that long".

So, they added "Mercy" and put in the "meow!" cat call too.

A song from his last solo album "Comedians" is one of my favorites.

Two of Roy's Biggest Fans: Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen. Elvis knew Roy and they came up at the same time playing the same clubs. Elvis' couldn't sing as high as Roy and loved his vocals. Bruce has said that he grew up listening to Roy and loved his music. That's why Bruce helped produce the "Black and White Night" special with dozens of top musical guests backing up Roy. A hidden gem is Roy's "Mean Woman Blues" which Elvis also covered buy IMHO not nearly as well.

It always amazes me that as soon as someone hears Roy's voice, they smile.

Orbison's career goes back to the '50s where he recorded rockabilly music at the Sun Studio...

Cool. "Pretty Woman" spent three weeks at number one in 1964 and might be the biggest hit of Orbison's career (but I didn't check). The song inspired a cover by Van Halen and a 1990 rom-com starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Roy Orbison is considered by many, including Elvis Presley, to be the greatest singer of early rock and roll. When you're ready for more from Roy Orbison also check out "Only The Lonely", "Running Scared", "Crying", "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)", "In Dreams", "It's Over", "Mean Woman Blues", "Blue Bayou", and "Love Hurts". Cinematic auteur director David Lynch used "In Dreams" to great effect in his 1986 film Blue Velvet and that stirred a renewed interest in Orbison's work that led to a revival of his career in the late eighties. His collaboration with Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra led to the formation of the supergroup Traveling Wilburys -- Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Although Orbison sings on their song "End of the Line", it turned into a homage to him when he passed away before the song was released.
