Chauvet cave, also known as Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave in southeastern France features some of the OLDEST and best preserved cave art in the world and the earliest known animations. Researchers realized that the flickering of firelight and the painting techniques on the irregular rock face of the cave allowed for primitive animations. The artwork is as much as 36,000 years old! A landslide buried the cave, preserving its contents until discovered and uncovered in 1994. An exact replica of the cave has been created. Evidence of prehistoric hearths, bear footprints, bear skulls, children's handprints in addition to the numerous artworks were found in the cave. Paintings of animals include rhinos, bears, lions, leopards, hyenas, horses, aurochs and bison. There's even venus figures.

These are very similar to the drawings at Lascaux.

I have to wonder if during the minutes the cave images were actually being drawn/painted, the flickering of the fire that lit the interior of the cave was the *reason* the drawings were ["out of alignment."]

It's difficult to see clearly when attempting to draw, paint, even write, when the rapidly changing illumination causes rapidly changing and random brighter and dimmer areas on the wall.
