What does the NEBRA SKY DISC depict?

The Nebra Sky Disc is a beautiful artefact that was uncovered from a Bronze Age enclosure in Germany during the 1990s. Decorated with the sun, the moon, the Pleiades star cluster and other symbols, it shows that that its Bronze Age designers had an interest in the night sky. What's interesting is that it was remodelled four times, with new elements being inlaid in gold and others being removed.

I see the seven sisters, a couple of dippers, a 5 or possibly 6 star cluster that I don't recognize. What a fantastic piece!

It's a friendly looking artifact!

This object has always intrigued me. It looks to have a purpose and be used in a utilitarian way. Maybe representing a specific astronomical alignment. On the other hand, it could just be decorative. Really not sure which way to look at it. Thanks for the mysteries Laura!

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTIFACTS FROM THE BRONZE AGE. FAST MORE DIFFICULT TO PRODUCE THAN IT IS GIVEN CREDIT FOR. FASCINATING…

An incredible discovery but probably we shall know the real purposes of this disk with it's connection with the moon, sun and the stars...
Good job 👏 👍

I think it's a device for positioning a temple. Hagar Qim and Mnajdra spring to mind. Why wait for the right time of year when you start setting the site out any time. The arcs give you the most northerly and southerly positions.

On second glance, it looks like Orions Belt below the seven sisters and between the sun and moon.

The holes around the outer diameter appear to be either nail holes or a string of some kind. Either would indicate that it was attached to something else. Intriguing...

In some respects this plays into your recent video on global myths.

The sky disc has been analyzed for precise positional alignment of the sun moon and stars. Only the Pleiades or seven sisters is recognizably accurate.

Interestingly most people today cannot see all seven stars in the cluster. Yet several references to seven dated back to the late Greek period. Now this may be the oldest rendition at 1600 BC.

It was the advent of the telescope that confirmed there were indeed seven sisters in that cluster in Taurus. Today this inconsistency has been swept aside. The usual explanation being that modern light pollution makes unaided viewing today imprecise. While in the “dark old days” keen eyed sailors and Shepards could see seven.

I’ve got ( rather had) 20/10 vision. And I set out to count seven stars from the flying bridge of a ship running dark in the middle of the Atlantic at night. No dice. Until I used a set of 8 power bridge binoculars. It’s basically the same deal for the moons of Jupiter. And as you may recall Gallego got his ass in a crack with the pope over that little observation.

So either those guys way back when had really really good eyes, or some form of magnification.

As to the rest of the disc and the other symbols it’s anybody’s guess. I do kind of wonder why they depicted that phase of the moon and in that particular orientation to the sun?

Any ideas y’all?

i don't looks like an odd smiley one eye sideways

seriously, tho, could the sun be a full moon, instead? some form of night sky representation? don't know, just throwing it out....

whatever it's purpose, a fascinating artifact, for some thought and effort to construct, not to mention the valuable

curious mystery, Laura! dang! got me thinking again🤔....not always successful.... don't do it enuff🤯
