1. The Altai Republic is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. It is geographically located in the West Siberia region of Asian Russia, and is part of the Siberian Federal District. The Altai Republic covers an area of 92,600 square kilometers and has a population of 206,168, the least-populous republic of Russia and federal subject in Siberia.

2. Since the annexation of the entire Altan Nuur Uriankhai into Russia in 1864-1867, the Altaians no longer enjoyed autonomy until June 1, 1922, with the creation of Oyrot Autonomous Oblast (Ойро́тская автоно́мная о́бласть), part of Altai Krai. During the Russian Civil War, the Confederated Republic of Altai was established, and declared as the first step to rebuilding Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire.

3. Gorno-Altaysk is the capital and the largest town of the Altai Republic. The history of the city dates back to the beginning of the XIX century, then on the place of modern Gorno-Altaisk there was a small Teleut settlement. In 1824, the first Russian settlers moved here from Biysk and founded the village of Ulala. Its further development was closely connected with the work of the Altai spiritual mission. In 1831, the main camp begins work in Ulal, where missionaries and clergymen gather.

4. Altay Region is a mountainous area in central Asia where Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan and China all come together. Situated between the Gobi Desert and the Siberian Plain, it is regarded as the homeland of the of the Mongolians, Turks, Koreans, Hungarians and Parzyrks. Ural-Altaic languages are named after the region. Ancient petroglyphs found in the area are believed to have been made the ancestors of the Altay.

5. The Altai Republic is situated in the Altai Mountains in the very center of Asia at the junction of the Siberian taiga, the steppes of Kazakhstan and the semi-deserts of Mongolia. The Altay region is one of the wildest and most interesting parts of southern Russia. It is a varied region with forest, steppes, wild river, lakes, deserts, snow capped mountain and abundant wildlife.

6. There are some outstanding vistas throughout the Altai region, but one of the best views comes from traversing the Katu-Yaryk pass. At 1,188m above sea level, it is one of the scariest high mountain passes in the world due to its loose gravel terrain, narrow roads and lack of barriers. If you’re brave enough to navigate the side of this cliff, you’ll be welcomed by exquisite views from the Chulyshman valley.

7. The Karakol valley is traditionally though to be a sacred place to the indigenous groups of the area and is the site various ancient burials. These burial sites, as well as the surrounding rock faces are also adorned with petroglyphs, giving the site a spiritual and cultural significance which persists in the mentality of locals today. About 5 thousand Petroglyphs can also be seen on 10km of the bank of the Chuya river, depicting images of people and animals on rock face.

Thank you so much as a Turkish i've learned so much about Altai and even the meaning of Turk.

I've heard that the word "Turk" comes from "helmet" (miğfer) {don't know what miğfer means in Chinese}. I'm not sure though..
Love,
From Turkey.

Turkic people origin from Tanais not Altai
Herodotus, Ptolemy, Mela's and Pliny mentioned that the Turks were in Tanais next to the Budini, Geloni and Thessgetae tribes, and this was several centuries before they moved to Altai!!!

"...they enjoy a relative autonomy from the rest of the Union". And other republics don't? This relative autonomy is given to absolutely ALL republics, not only to Altai.

I wonder if the small German population were WW2 POWs or East Germans that were sent to a gulag and stayed in the region after freed.

Hello author!. Altai has never been under the rule of the Qin Empire. For the fact that the ancestors of the Altaians did not kneel before the invaders, more than a million people were slaughtered. And in Soviet times, when the Altaians wanted to create their own state. Stalin ordered the extermination of 60 percent of the Altaians. And he gave the southern part of Altai to Mongolia and China. At the moment, the Altaians are recorded as an extremist people. More than 2000 Altaians are registered as foreign agents. Do you know why? Because we have revived the ancient religion of the Turkic world. Both in tsarist times and now, the Kremlin wants to destroy this religion. But the people are resisting. And you know who set the Qin Empire against the Altai state.
