The name Istanbul has only been used in an official capacity for about 100 years. However, colloquially it has been known as Istanbul for over 600 years.

Man, I wish covid didn’t happen. I was actually in a position financially and had enough free time that I was planning on traveling to Turkey in April of 2020. Covid fucked my finances and my mental health though and now I’m not convinced I’ll ever make it there. Perhaps one day.

There is something wrong that I’d like to politely point out. While yes, the name Istanbul is a colloquial name used to refer to “konstantiniyye” the name Istanbul originates from one of its first colloquial names, islambol (the city of Islam) over time this went through the transformation that gave us the name Istanbul today (for those who are curious it went from islambol, then to istambol, and then to Istanbul)

Thanks for reading, and have a happy rest of your day.

Yeah I was aware of this fact, it's funny how even the damn Ottomans who eradicated the Byzantine nation called the city its original and TRUE name.

Also, Bulgarian nationalists know this city by a different name XD

So it's not too dissimilar to Japan and Nihon. Japan is what everyone else calls Japan, while the Japanese call it Nihon.

I don’t ever call it Istanbul. Never I always say, Constantinople. And you should too.

Why they changed it? I can't say. People just liked it better that way.
