I mean, I get it. Use the matriarch to shield yourself from judging eyes. But this is still the grandma that fully judged the MC for being born with a single mom.

A lot of people are saying whats the point of this scene when its shown later that the grandma was toxic.
Bruh this is how character writing works, just because someone has negative aspects does not mean they are negative as a whole. Besides yall are missing the point. The culture is hella toxic, but they would go very far and do anything to save themselves and their honor. That is what family dynasties mean to these peoole. One single unit, no individual presence. You only exist for the betterment of the family, not yourself.

You can tell the American/Western mindset in the comments…which is one of the main points of the movie. The clash in customs and beliefs.

My grandpa used to say the same thing, u don’t need to thank your family… He was such a great person, one of those bigger than life people. 😇

The difference between the American culture and the Asian is clearly visible in the comment section 😂😂😂

the reason for this scene, and the scene where she compliments rachel and her auspicious nose, is to show that the grandmother is kind and loving...to her people/family. she makes a few offhand remarks to eleanor where we realize their tension, but it builds up that she could be on rachel's side. once rachel is considered not good enough to be in their family, we're treated to emotional whiplash when even sweet grandmother has turned on her.

a lot of people stupid in comment, this scene means that even though you have problem in outside (like your husband cheat on you), dont afraid of attending your bestfriends wedding cause you will always have family (in this scene was grandma) which family will protect you whenever bad things happend to you (in this scene grandma was protecting her of being alone to wedding). And never say thankyou to your own family cause this is family, we are such as one body, drop and raised together, protect each other and thats the responsibility not the kindness. Thats the price of great things such as family

The comments here literally proved the point Eleanor was making throughout the entire movie, western views and asians view do not match..

I disagree.
Especially in this day and age where people are rude and lacking manners; if you love and appreciate someone find your voice and thank them. If you're not going to thank the world, thank your family.
If not thanks, then tell them you love and appreciate them.
Whatever it is; show them in actions AND in words. We are human, we err and we judge.

So lovely.
But most of the time I have to apologize for my grand parents.

Oh wow. Comment section took the scene literally. Younger lady got cheated on, was really lonely, supposed to attend the wedding with her husband, imagine the heartbreak she was feeling. She ran to the grandma, told her what happened. Prolly grandma gave her some good advice that she's better than that, or it's not her loss. Grandma as a show of love and affection accompanied the lady. Lady said thank you. Grandma responded with Family Never Says Thank You. Meaning, "Don't mention it" "You are my blood, I'll always be here for you"

It's not a scenario where the lady said thank you because grandma passed her the salt on the table. If that was the case, I'm pretty sure the grandma will say "you're welcome"

Personally I always wanted the G’ma to be gangster and put her daughter in law and those aunties in their place, but that is the culture and partly the class norm. All about outward appearance and just as in war you must maintain the front line.

What is the full meaning here after seeing later on that the problematic roots revealed to be from grandma?

Family never says "Thank you"? Meaning you don't have to say thank you to your family?! The messages in this movie were so toxic.
