The vast majority of dengue patients will not have any permanent or debilitating issues. Most of them would recover in fact 98% would recover. Typically very young children, pregnant ladies and elderly people suffer complications due to dengue. The average patients would do well just with the supportive treatment. So hospitalization is seldom required for dengue. Typically we can monitor the platelet count once in 2-3 days, we can also make the patient comfortable by giving paracetamol, avoid aspirin and other inflammatory drugs which can actually increase the bleeding complications. Occasionally there are case reports and Antipodes saying that papaya leap extract is actually beneficial for improving the platelet count in dengue patients and these could be tried there is no harm. The idea is manage most of the patients at home rather than in hospitals where the cost can be very high and mostly it is not required.
