It’s Actually GOOD? Intel Alder Lake Pricing!

Let’s get started with intel. It looks like this is the Alder lake week because that’s pretty much been the main subject of all my videos recently. We’ve talked about performance, we talked core configuration, power limits, power consumption, but we never really talked about price. Except for saying that this would be the determining factor in intel’s success.

Unfortunately, Intel has always thought of itself as premium. And if they could win in a single segment, then the prices would be through the roof. For example, even if it really only won in gaming, the 8 core 9900k was still priced as high as AMD’s 12 core 3900x, even though, the AMD part destroyed intel in most tasks. And their top-of-the-line 8 core CPUs of today still have a Suggested price of around 540$, even if they dont sell at that price.
\
So what do you think pricing will be like with Alder lake? Well, we got a leak! Micro center listed the two top-of-the-line cpu’s by mistake and it is GOOD. The i9 12900k is to be priced at 669 US. And some guy was able to get his hands on one for about 610US, so the price may slightly vary. That’s a whopping 130$ Less than AMD’s 5950X. And as you might have heard, It’s going to beat it in single-core and probably match it in multi-core. By the way, this is what the box looks like. It’s a good old box, but inside is a round gold wafer case where you’d find the CPU. It’s fine, but I definitely prefer the 9900K’s dodecahedron case.

Just ordered a 5900x upgrade kit w/ B550 & 32gigs 3600mhz ddr4 for <$1k and since its replacing my 3770k from 2013 for sure won't be having any regrets soon.

They make up any loss on the cpu by charging you extra for the new Intel chipset on the newly required motherboard.

As an owner of an X570 board, I have absolutely ZERO interest in switching over to an Intel platform, not now nor any time soon. I'd rather just upgrade my CPU to whatever final iteration of the AM4 platform there will be and then revisit the newer DDR5 platforms in another 2-3 years or so.

Still don’t trust intel score/benchmarks. Remember amd benchmarks under windows 11 is messed up. Intel/ms are in bed together. At least till proper amd/windows 11 patch for AMD CPUs. Still happy with my x470 mobo/2700x/16GB/gtx 1080ti/ssd..

Waiting see what happens intels GPUs and RDNA3, holding on GTX 1080Ti for now. Prices still ridiculous high here in Canada.

Problem is not only the price of the CPU... Add that to the new mobo + DDR5 (i know its not mandatory but why would you get a 12900k and a low end mobo?) . DDR5 listed prices are ridiculous... 32 kits for 400$...

Sounds promising. Looking forward to real world testing. Thanks for the updates!

about a year ago i bought the asus tuff 3060ti for almost MSRP (lucky me) now I need a damn CPU and the 12600k/kf looks pretty good

Alder Lake at 115C, 250W. One word=electromigration. High power and high temperatures are basically bad for semiconductors, die solder, and chip packages. As for Raptor Lake, know that the Intel engineers are crapping their pants now that Apple introduced the M1 max. Expect some sudden and drastic changes in architecture.

The 12900K is still a 24 thread CPU. In that regard, its competition is the 5900X. The 5950X is not a CPU targeted at those who are solely gamers, so if the 12900K isn't beating it at multithread then they can't hope to charge equal or greater than it. If it was just a matter of the best each company offers in the segment then the 11900k would be considered competitive against AMD's 16 core. When you account for the fact that a DDR5 based platform is going to cost more than a DDR4 one, will it really be as performant as the price difference suggests?

What about the Motherboard and DDR5 pricing leaks?

What's up guys I'm Snows...*intentional aaaand this is your boot sequence!

Nope those prices definitely are not good!
Factor in sales tax, DDR5, Mobo and you're looking at a bad deal imho.
Plus why would anyone want to pay the early adopter penalty tax ?
Or early adopter bugs ?

it will be nice to get real benchmarks, seeing issues arrive, like downclocking because of all the heat it gets from 300+W

I never believe rumors. They are often wrong, so this doesn't beat AMD at anything yet. Once it's released and different reviewers, especially GN, Hardware Unboxed, Hardware Canucks and Paul's Hardware run their testing (slight variations due to test platforms and testing methodology) then I'll know what's faster.

No, I don't expect this to beat Zen 3 by a lot. Or, if it does it's using twice the power to do so and is doing brute force high frequency to do it. That is another rumor I saw and it's more believable considering Intel 7, or Intel 10nm is known to have power issues at higher speeds.

I also expect the MBs to be outrageous in price which offsets the "good pricing" of $700 USD, which is now $200 USD higher than the flagship 9900K.

This is an 8 core BIG processor. If I bought it that's the way I would think about it. It may very well beat the 5800X pretty easily, time will tell, but for price comparison, the 5800X is WAY less than this. The 5800X can be had for around $370. I bought it for $350, so that's my comparison. AMD COULD discount their 2 chip Ryzen CPUs but probably won't. Their too busy making EPYC for which they will never keep up with that demand until they have a Zen 4 line.

I just don't consider the small cores because they're there for power efficiency. OK, so that means they're at about the same efficiency as a regular Zen 3 core by removing a billion or so transistor/core. So for me, it doesn't offer anything.

But if you were going to compare based on cores, this compares to the 5900X, which is a $550 CPU. But AMD will discount it if Alder Lake actually does show to be very impressive.

In other words, price comparisons are meaningless because it's fluid. I saw many reviewers rip the 5800X because it's $450 MSRP. But I bought it for $350 at Micro Center a few months ago. So how will my $350 USD 5800X perform against this 12 core Alder Lake at $700 USD if it ends up being that price. Will it have twice the performance? Will my 2K gaming with my 6800 XT all of a sudden be much better or are my games still mostly GPU bound since I game at 2K? Will this use under 125W when running an all core heavy workload? That's about where the 5800X is. The 5900X is only a little higher than that.

Test data REALLY needed to make any kind of opinion, along with pricing data for CPU, MB of at least X570 caliber and memory kits to make a judgement between a brand new architecture against one that's a year old and has better pricing now.

According to what AMD said, and not rumor, the Zen 3 refresh with layered cache is going to make improvements for gaming and probably some apps that can benefit from the added cache. I have 3 gaming rigs in the home for different people. That refresh will at least go into my gaming rig. I'll be waiting for the comparison data between that, the standard Zen 3 CPU and the Alder Lake line.
