The Goldie Hawn Special | FULL SPECIAL (1978)

It-girl Goldie Hawn has proven herself to be more than just the giggly blonde from ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN (1968-1973). After the show made her a household name, Goldie went on to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in CACTUS FLOWER (1969). She's appeared in many comedy classics since, including PRIVATE BENJAMIN (1980), which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and DEATH BECOMES HER (1992) alongside Meryl Streep. This 1978 variety show, THE GOLDIE HAWN SPECIAL, showcases her singing, dancing and of course, comedy sketches with guests John Ritter, Shaun Cassidy, George Burns and the Harlem Globetrotters.

I have all of her specials and love them, especially the 1980 one with Liza. Also notice the dancer who crashes into Goldie here: 2:18 ... that is Dennis Stewart "Leo" from Grease who races John Travolta at Thunder Road.

I know variety shows went out of style a long time ago, but I like how they let actors show off their other skills - like singing and dancing - that we didn’t get to see in their other vehicles. I didn’t realize that Goldie Hawn did TV specials, and it’s a treat to see this. I’d watch Goldie read the phone book.

I think Goldie was closest replacement for Gracie that George ever got . He knew how smart she is and her track record for playing the dumb blonde bit for years on Laugh In. They were perfect together, and George got a big kick out of the whole thing. For a few minutes here we got to see the old Laugh In Goldie, and a great example of vaudeville.
