It is definitely worth it to achieve a regular 20 year retirement if possible. I retired as a Army E7 which gives me about $2100 a month after taxes. I am 80% VA Disabled so it gives me almost $2000 a month tax free. So between them I get about $4100 a month. I also use Tr-care overseas which is very cheap. I am working on getting increases on two of my VA Disibilities which will take me to 100%. If succesful I will recieve $3737 a month VA pay (unmarried with no dependents) and combine that with my retirement pay that will give me $5800 a month. So, not to bad. 20 years were hard on both my mental and physical health and the years definitely had thier ups and downs but I am reaping the rewards of my service now.

I retired at 21 years mark. I get my retirement and get 70% VA disability =3862.00. I am also a redux retiree so at 62 I get caught up approx ($1000.00 more a month and resets again). I am a CBT vet but was given CRDP instead of tax-free CRSC because it is a higher amount determined by defas. I do get taxed on my military ret. That being said Tricare is the best benefit from retirement in my opinion, especially at 60. I also have the VA I can use but presently use it only for MH. I am working on other conditions too. So, if one is 100% that's more with no tax but elusive for many but better. But in the end Tricare appts can be obtained quick as opposed to VA which takes a bit unless you go to their sick call. LOL. Off subject VA paid for my advanced degree with monthly stipends. Folks the military was the best decision I ever made. Regardless

If offered a Medboard, even if your past your 20 year mark the troop should take it. A troop who is medboarded will have an easier and quicker time getting their VA disability. Plus a medboarded troop is less likely to get recalled after retirement.

I wanted to update you! With the help of you and Dr Sharma I was able to get to 100% p&t! By looking over my current (at the time) disabilities at 80% and telling me you were confident my disabilities were static and not to worry about being reduced! That gave me the confidence to go for 100%!

Negative it’s like going through the process all over again. You might even see the same docs and actually pray you do. The docs I all saw again it was super smooth I was given the quickest exams cause I’m memorable. But my PTSD doc the first time was an ex navy seal and totally easy to talk to and understandable. When I went the second time my MEB it was this female doc who never served I couldn’t feel comfortable and I had retell my whole story, she asked questions the other would think of asking I hated it

Hi Clay, there is a TERA option as well if you’re over 15 years and will be facing a med board. In that situation if you were going to be boarded for medical reasons and over 15 years, they can allow you to retire early at 15 years of service for medical reasons and not classify it as a medical retirement so you still get the disability and retirement paid concurrent

Informative video. Could you help clear something up? The 2018 BRS legislation, finally gives those who serve a guaranteed minimum monetary benefit for their time in service when they turn 60. (No longer need a full 20 to simply earn something) so, should we expect those who served before 2018, to get the same benefit? Thanks for any help

Question, how do I know if a disability was considered combat related or not? Where can I find which disabilities are and are not? I am a combat veteran so does this mean any va disability is considered so or no?
