This Is How Lightroom's Generative Remove SAVES PHOTOS

When Adobe added Generative Remove to Lightroom, I immediately reviewed older photos in my library that I originally didn't want to edit because they had too many distractions. Now, with Generative Remove and Generative Fill, I can easily get rid of them and breathe new life into these photos that would otherwise never have been shared.

You sold it to me with it's concept of "creative vision". Nice work, it works for me.

Anyone who "freaks out" over AI probably also is baffled by the electric light bulb.

Thank you! Well said and presented! Before AI we tried to do all these with the clone stamp tool, the content aware fill tool and the healing tool. Most of the times it didn't improve the photo...

Thank you Brian, another very good lesson. I do really like hearing your thought process while you're editing. I believe that that helps me learn what to look for the images to edit. Very helpful.

These tools are such a help to photographers. I wonder if the same folks who decry AI tools are also spending hours removing items in their photo the old fashioned way- or using physical masks, caustic chemicals and enlargers to darken their skies. Maybe, but I doubt it. So really, how are AI tools that different if they help you reach your personal creative vision. Well done!

As a photographer I appreciate the new AI tools in Lightroom and Photoshop. I'm all for removing items and enhancing the photos using all of the tools. I've used Adobe products for years but adding items to a photograph like your example just makes this photograph a fake. Even with a disclaimer I feel this is not what a photography should be about. Most work hard to strive to create the best photograph possible, not create some that was not in the photograph. Brian, I appreciate all of your videos and find them helpful to learn and master post processing. This just goes to far.

Me too. Thanks

Question for you Brian: using the AI tools can cause the final file to be significantly larger (ie: 1-2 go). Do you actually save that large file? How do you downsize that large file if you’re going to have it printed? Thank you.

Photography is art... pure. Not history. Every decision that goes into the photograph is an artistic decision. Some people think that they are capturing history, therefore edits are a violation... but even choosing to take a picture is an editorial decision. Where to crop, what to include, color balance, depth of field. Each one of those decisions changes "history" to our vision of it...which makes it art.

Extend that to the AI tools, and you are simply choosing to use a tool to help you create your art. No different that choosing to use a different paint brush to get the artistic effect you want in a painting.

I would have zoomed in tighter on the bench area and tried not to get that in the AI masking, the final result looks odd to me.
I have found that a lot of times I need to redo an area by zooming and applying the mask, it grabs to much.

I noticed that you’re using Photoshop Beta, why?

Great video!!! But why are people moaning about AI in Lightroom??? It's no different whatsoever to editing a photo in normal Lightroom. That is the photo edited in Lightroom looks nothing like the photo that came out of the camera. Probably photographers from the 1990s who were using old film cameras were up in arms about manipulation of digital photos when they came out in late 1990s, no matter how primitive the editing was. People up in arms now about it but in a few years time AI will be the norm and something else will come out to piss people off! Its progress, some things are good, some bad. Personally I much prefer old 35mm film cameras both throways and pro, I think the images look much better than digital no matter what camera they are taken on (I currently have Z8).

What version of LR is this? My options/windows don't look like this. For instance when I click on the crop tool, I don't get many of these options. My version says 13.4. Or maybe my settings are different.
