Taiwan may look like a America versus China issue, but in reality it is a China versus every-one-else issue. The only reason why the US can even think about getting involved in cross strait relations is because all the impacted countries excluding China want and allow the US to play a counterbalancing role against China

Taiwan is a part of China because China has 2 parts due to civil war, Taiwan of China and mainland of China. Currently both 2 parts have their own administrations but UN and almost all countries admit mainland China as the country China. Sooner or later both parts will be united because separation caused by civil war should not last long. God bless their early unity.

With Taiwan's current capabilities, the economy depends on China, and the military depends on the United States. It has no conditions to truly achieve independence. It must rely on a big country to survive. If the current ruling party wants to change the balance with China over the past 70 years, Taiwan needs to choose between China and the United States.
