People are moving out of Portugal in droves because vultures came, saw and destroyed what made Portugal a great place. I would caution Dominicans to not just open the doors and let everyone with money in if they want to live in a prosperous fair country, for Dominicans. At the end of the day, Jamie may love the DR, but he's still a salesman and profits from people wanting to move to DR for investment purposes.

Saludos,

As an investor based in Puerto Rico, I’ve commented on several of your videos and generally find your content insightful. However, I must respectfully disagree with the points raised in this particular video. Allow me to provide some clarification and context.

Puerto Rico boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Suggesting otherwise seems unnecessary, especially if done to promote real estate investments. While Puerto Rico is undoubtedly navigating challenging times, it maintains significantly less wealth disparity compared to the Dominican Republic (DR) and has the highest GDP per capita in Latin America.

Regarding crime, while Puerto Rico historically has higher crime rates related to drug activity, these rates have decreased over the past decade. Importantly, petty crimes and home invasions are far less common in Puerto Rico than in the DR, where such issues are more prevalent. Additionally, Puerto Rico’s infrastructure is considerably more modern. While the DR has areas like Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Plata with developed infrastructure, Puerto Rico surpasses the DR in terms of the number and quality of developed cities and highways.

It’s worth noting that the DR, being geographically 5.2 times larger and nearly five times more populous than Puerto Rico, naturally has more millionaires. However, Puerto Rico attracts more high-end luxury real estate investors, including billionaires, a fact supported by data. Furthermore, Puerto Rico is becoming increasingly appealing to investors despite the rising cost of living, a trend reminiscent of Hawaii’s trajectory.

Puerto Rico’s status as a U.S. territory provides unparalleled governmental stability in the region. While the DR has shown impressive economic growth over the past 15 years, Puerto Rico’s GDP remains comparable despite the significant differences in population and size. Additionally, FEMA funds provide critical support for recovery after hurricanes in Puerto Rico, a resource unavailable to the DR.

When it comes to education, Puerto Rico produces more professionals per square mile or capita than any other Latin American country. This positions the island for future economic growth, even as retaining talent remains a challenge. Many professionals who move to the mainland continue to invest in the island, strengthening its economic resilience.

Regarding tourism, the DR has cultivated a robust leisure tourism industry, while Puerto Rico’s tourism model is designed to cater to corporate and independent travelers. Visitors to Puerto Rico tend to spend more per night, and the island offers safety without the need to stay in a resort—a significant advantage. Moreover, Puerto Rico’s economy benefits from diverse industries, including pharmaceuticals, aerospace, and manufacturing, which contribute to higher GDP per capita.

While both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic share similarities, promoting one by disparaging the other undermines the broader perspective needed to assess opportunities objectively. I hope this additional context enriches your understanding and future discussions.

I HATE paying taxes. It’s one of the reasons I became a CPA. But the problem with Act 21 & 22 isn’t the law. It’s the TAXPAYERS! Too many people thought they could get over and wouldn’t get caught. This is one time I agree with the IRS. If people would have followed the law Puerto Ricans and those that moved would have benefited.

I live in Puerto Rico, and i think DR is bigger, so more beaches….. They are beautiful!! The whole caribbean is beautiful … You make good points…The population here is not growing at all… In local hospitals they have closed maternity wards…. It’s a great place to live if there was more investments here, like manufacturing etc…. Puerto Rico is in Decline unfortunately… Politicians ruin everything…… I love your program

Very interesting! We’re currently in Mexico and seeing the economy boom here as well with more wealthy Americans investing here, getting residencies, etc. Happy to hear it’s also happening in the DR! Mexico has gotten stricter in terms of financial requirements for people moving here, do you see foresee the same thing happening in the DR?

Hey Jamie, Great Video! (as usual) Tons of "Valuable" information about things to come. I live in NYC and am seriously considering buying a property in the DR. I particularly enjoy your video about the 5 best places to live in the DR and although my first choice would be Santo Domingo (My family is from there) I have no problems with your ranking. Looking forward to the next video. Take care.

The issue is that the us government gives continental usa incentives while leaving puerto rico natives out to dry.

Here for the comments and they are mostly insightful & informative. A few others are nothing more than understandible hurt patriotic pride (nothing wrong with that). As a whole, as an INVESTMENT OP, DR is the better option. PR, which I love, because of its attachment to US is - for better or worse - FLA.

Yet, you have Dominicans arriving by small boats illegally to stay in Puerto Rico with family already here or to try and get to the Mainland USA from Puerto Rico.

You truly have not been to PR. Have been to Flamenco in Culebra Island? Crime is no different here than in any mayor metropolis. Third, the savings even without law 22 are better than in NYC, LA, or Even Houston. I been to all 3! If you want to push DR, that's fine, but do not lowball us here!
