I've got one, a GE I bought in 2019 when I remodeled my kitchen. Its been chugging along with no issues. The last one I had was smaller so as to fit in the first small apartment I lived in after college and it lasted 35 years with no issues. Love the simplicity of these units. Nothing wrong with avoiding the whiz-bang-fancy-pants electronic gizmos hoisted on the consumer these days.

MY whirlpool broke ( purchased in 2015). I bought a side by side Frigidaire and a garage fridge. I figured both won't breakdown at the same time.

Bottom freezers are very wasteful of space. You lose about 20% of freezer space compared to top freezers. This is because the gliding mechanism takes up space and the food has to be put into a basket. You cannot put food up against the walls for full use of the freezer space. I learned this the hard way when I bought a bottom freezer model. It doesn't hold nearly as much as my old top freezer model. Also, the better more expensive top freezers have separate temp controls for the refrigerator and the freezer.

So, no drawbacks for using them in the kitchen, other than they last forever and are cheap to fix. For my garage, nothing but the best: Gladiator garage top mount. We've had Gladiator for about 20 years, not a single problem.

i do alot of meal prep and top mount draws always make it hard to fit alot of meal prep containers in so i go for bottom

When I was young, we had a top freezer refrigerator, and it's in favor of me since I only get water and ready-to-eat snacks in the fridge. I don't cook, so I don't open the freezer a lot. Now that I am an adult and physically taller, we bought a new refrigerator, and it's a bottom freezer (Panasonic). It is also convenient on my part since I don't need to bend most of the time, as it is painful on my back. I still open the fridge most of the time, which is now chest level, so I don't have to bend over.

Does anyone make a top freezer fridge with adjustable split cantilever glass shelves in the fridge section anymore? That’s what I have now and I don’t want to buy something with wire shelves or full width shelves with minimal adjustability.

I live in GA. I moved my Mom in with me and needed an extra fridge for space. I bought a GE top freezer fridge identified for Garage use. It’s in garage now. Question: other than ensuring doors close properly, is leveling important for how the fridge runs? My garage floor is not level, and after taking some time to level fridge, I had to slide fridge over a few feet, threw the level off, and gave up on leveling it again ! 😅

Big problem is many top refrigerators are made in China and we all know quality control is not the best. I just brought a 11.6 cu ft GE that has sides too warm & freezer door insulation is torn. What makes it worse is u have to bend down too much to get into refrigerator part in GE, Frigidaire, etc.

The way our kitchen was designed and the size of it won't allow us to get anything but a top-freezer refrigerator. Fortunately, they are work horses and more affordable.
