Synesthesia is a condition where the brain mixes up the senses— and one sensory modality causes a simultaneous stimulation of another. For example, a person with synesthesia may “hear color” or “see sound.”

Synesthesia involves any of the five senses. The most common form is that of colored letters and numbers, in which someone always sees a certain color in response to a letter of the alphabet or a number. For instance, a synesthete might see the number 7 as light blue, 4 as purple, or the word “sky” as dark grey.

When I hear classical music I see the music, either I see the instrument being played or I see a sound. For example, the violin is a thin fast swirling line I see in my head. Has anyone experienced this?

I didn't discover I had synastasia until the invention of the internet. I just thought it was my norm. I see numbers, some letters, names, months of the year and days of the week in set colours. Sometimes there is a taste attached to a name. I have tried to take the University test at Brighton but it is not reliable for a person with synastasia because they dont have any metallic colours like silver or colours like Teal. My Thursday is silver and my Wednesday is a dark teal. I think the best person to generate such tests needs to be someone who actually experiences Synastasia. It has been considered by some researchers as a disorder or a gift. I have also read it could be linked to Autism.

i dont have synesthesia atleast i dont think,
but i felt utter disbelief when i learned my friend didn't have a strict 1 or 2 colors of a shape and had a hard time visualizing that shape any other color, like i have a horribly hard time trying to think of a trapezoid as any other color then red or black, or picturing a square any other color then red.

I didn't know I was different either, I see words as color's and individual letters as color's. I was kind of shocked when I found out it wasn't a normal thing for everyone.

I’m the same way. I realized most people don’t match numbers, letters, shapes, music, to colors. Circle- red, square- blue, rectangle- hot pink, triangle- orange, pentagon- blue, hexagon- brown, octagon- purple. There’s lots more. Same as Anastasia, I thought everyone had this. I came to recognize clearly that other people did not when I was 12. I got into a fight with another girl over a poster we had to make for civics class in the 1968 presidential election. Ours was for Nixon and I was upset she’d colored the N in bright red! No way! N must be what Crayola now calls Spring green!
