Turned my desk setup into a MacBook Pro 16" workstation, and I threw in a home office tour too!

For a slightly cleaner version of the dongle, you can get the Caldigit TS3 plus and mount it to the bottom of your desk to get all of the ports you need, plus a little more.

My USB-C monitor also has USB ports on the back, you can velcro SD-card reader behind the monitor for the clean look.

Unfortunately, I have to make enough space for my windows work laptop and personal MacBook Pro so my setup is a lot more cluttered by necessity. I’m with you on having one monitor. I feel like dual monitors are just distracting.

Take a look at the Razer Thunderbolt 4 dock, it might help with your problem of not having USB ports. That’s what I am currently using on my setup. It has enough power to charge your mac as well so you can keep your setup clean. I am using the Mercury version of it.
