Izmir, Turkey - top sites to visit in Izmir, what to see in Izmir, Turkey. Let's go visit Izmir which is a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Izmir is a city on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Known as Smyrna in antiquity, Izmir was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Today, Izmir's expansive archaeological sites include the Roman Agora of Smyrna, now an open-air museum. The hilltop Kadifekale, or Velvet Castle, built during Alexander’s reign, overlooks the city of Izmir, Turkey.
Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a population of around 4 million, the second biggest port after Istanbul, and a very good transport hub. The fact that almost half of its population of 4 million are under the age of 30, makes İzmir a city full of life. The city hosts tens of thousands of university students, educates scientists, artists, business leaders and academics. It is a rapidly growing city on the Central Aegean coast of Turkey.

I love living vicariously through your travels Vic! Your videos are always informative and seem to capture the essence of the location. Turkey is the highest on my list of countries to visit.

Yes, Vic: thank you, thank you, for a review of Izmir, where I lived from 1953-55 as a 7-9 year old American girl with my sister, stepmother and my father, a Chief in the US Navy. I recognize many of the narrow streets, and especially the waterfront, and statues for this historical ancient city. Our US Navy ship left the waterfront area bound for Naples, Casablance, and the open Atlantic Ocean for NYC, past our Statute of Liberty. The Mediterranean is so deep blue, I shall never forget it. Thank you immensely, Vic.

Neptune is the god of sea and of horses. Horse = Horus (horses pulling the sun chariot). It is the sun on top of an obelisk. An obelisk is a stone ray of sunlight coming to earth. Here it is used as a sundial and will move through the day/year around the circular stone base. Totally contrary to Islam which is moon based religion.

So different from Cairo and Luxor, hardly anyone in gelabia or higab. The architecture reminds me of Malta. Another excellent and informative vid Vic. Thanks for sharing.

Why Greeks attack on all videos that are related to turkey? That's shame. Be yourself and don't be an idiot nationalist. It's a juar travel video and whole Anatolia istanbul belong to us.
