These dumplings are NOT pierogies as someone is mistakenly claiming, they are called varenyky and can be filled with savory or sweet fillings. They're delicious 🤗

My biology teacher in high school was Ukrainian and whenever the class did well overall on tests, or after finals, he’d always make pancakes for us. They were soooo yummy and I still can figure out how he made them. In the winter months when it started to get cold, he’d set up a hot chocolate station and would bring soup or stew for the class. He was everyone’s favorite teacher! He was also the football coach, so everyone called him Coach Bear instead of Mr. Berezovsky. He’s the teacher that got me into forensic science and helped me discover my passion for forensic anthropology!

I grew up across the street from the sweetest Ukrainian lady. She was like a second grandma. I loved her so much. She would let me help her bake and she didn’t have grandkids so she left her recipe book to me when she passed away 10 years ago. I think of her every time I make one of her recipes.

As a ukrainian, I'm so happy to hear all this. Welcome to the world of ukrainian food!☺️
Some has already told you here in the comments, but the dumplings are called "varenyki". Potatoes are one of the most traditional fillings, but my fondest memory of them is when we made them for a holiday — with cherry filling — and put coins in some of them to test our luck. I nearly lost a tooth to that tradition, but was confirmed a lucky bch once again! 😅

Traditionally you eat Salo on black bread with sea salt and raw garlic. (Vodka is encouraged)

Whenever my grandma made that for me, i knew its a "stay home" kind of day

My Slav heart is always so happy when people like our cuisine. I'm Czech, but we cook most of these dishes too. I taught my Italian friend how to make those yeast pancakes and I was delighted with how obsessed she is with them❤

It's so sad that eastern european cuisine is usually overlooked by Western influencers. its truly one of a kind, so cozy and tasty. im glad that you liked this ukrainian restaurant, hope others will try something like this too :)

I'm glad you liked our cultural food! Just wanted to say that the dumplings are actually "varenyky", and they taste really good with potato filling.

I’ve had the crepes one before. My old best friend is Russian/Ukrainian, so her mom had made those for us plenty of times, except I think she made hers with chicken and onions instead of chicken and mushrooms. It’s been a while since I’ve had them since I’m not friends with that girl anymore.

I'm Colombian, and my wife is Ukranian (As in I am from Colombia and she is from Ukraine and we met in college) and our favorite thing to do is try combining dishes from our respective cultures! One of the best was making dumplings stuffed with my Abuelitas Asado Pulled Pork recipe!

As a Ukrainian, thank you. Just thank you for noticing us and our delicious food🥰
Crepes with chicken and mushrooms aren’t traditional but we all eat them and love them. Usually we would put a lot of filling in the middle and fold it kinda like a tamale

Borsh is done all over Eastern Europe, just differently in different countries and even within the countries. I don’t like it sour but some do. Some add vinegar, and some do vegetarian, some add sweet peppers some don’t, some add eggs, some don’t. Different meats. There’s also cold borsh cooked in the summer, less hardy and more juice(I think no cabbage in the cold one..). Borsh literally has so many varieties and trust me, they all taste quite different… I’m glad you enjoyed. Just finished my borsh yesterday… always takes me back to my childhood ❤

This all looks so delicious, borscht is gorgeous, and the dumplings look similar to pierogi (which I love) so that is definitely a must try. I need to find a Ukrainian restaurant ASAP.
