Because my brain doesn't remember what I can't see, I had three failed attempts at a compost bin before this new one that I'm trying to balance and save.

I moved it by my front door, so I get daily information on when it needs turning, moisture, or fibre, so far it's working out.
Just a little bit stinky because I watered it when it dried out completely, (Australia, amirite?), and then it rained so the microbiome not only reactivated but flooded and then partially drowned.

Thanks for the tips, I'll add more fibre and aeration.

Can you use the drippings collected from the bottom?

Problem is that in my plot, the majority of what i can put in it is grass clippings. Not much brown stuff to add there...
Apropos, I wouldn't put newspapers there, something tells me the "ink" is not something you want there

If your bin/pile gets full, you could also store a good amount in a bag or bin in the freezer. It won't compost until you take it out, though it's better than sending it to a trash heap.

I just started composting using grass clippings, sawdust, discarded vegetable matter, twigs, etc and it just reeks of elephant excrement. Not sure if I made a mistake by throwing in a Septic Tank bacteria packet to introduce bacteria or perhaps I added too much water because my compost pile looks like sludge.

Summary: Should not smell...for that... Keep it in proper mosture ..green adds water browns drys water...balance both to keep mosture but not wet...keep turning compost to add air

Pumpkins ruined mine. They hold a ton of water. It’ll eventually dry out.
