Can confirm the lawn mower route. I've used it to process the dead leaves in the fall. Rake them up, let the kids play in them, then go over the lot with the mower. Breaks it down to feed the lawn for next year.

Number 2 tip is to aerate. Just get one of those compost mate spiral tools from Bunnings. It's amazing what a difference it makes.

I often do intentionally leave a bit of roughly cut branches in my compost as well. They form a great medium for certain fungi to nestle in, which further helps me break down all the leaflitter during winter. (I often don't buy mulch for certain areas, i just cover them up with roughly 60-40 walnut & oak leaves. The walnut leaves brewk down way quicker, hence why i use more of those.)
Adding the fungi colonies speeds up the progress evej more!


As for if you're concerned with the walnut leaves, we're fairly certain we have a french (white) walnut. Or an English one. My grandma has the other type, that's what we know for certain.
Their leaves have never caused any harm to anything in the entire area.
And black walnuts are not commonly sold here at all gladly :)

My mower works beautifully for shredding leaves and yard twigs. the worms definitely love it through the fall and early spring.

A lot of my kitchen scraps go in my bins. I find a layer of sugar cane mulch helps.

I'm definitely going to use a push mower to chop up my compost. Thank you for this info cause i would have never thought to use a push mower. Now I've got to borrow one cause all i have is a riding mower, lol. Maybe my riding mower will do the same thing. I'm going to give it a go ❤

I buy gas mowers at yard sales. $25 - $35 gets me 2-3 years of grinding up my clippings.
