It's the best approach, I think. Making the parts wider then cutting to the finished dimensions really cuts down on the possibility of error, and makes for better end spacing.

Thanks Alan, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I really like that one, John, and the slant-sided bowl you show in the intro and exit as well. I don't know why I never thought of making them a little long to allow you to cut all the sides lined up, great idea! I bet that makes for much better joints, and I think the most you could lose would be one finger-width or so. Thanks for that.

Very good John, I like the idea of making them longer and trimming them after. Makes setups a lot easier. Like the 'Billy Mays' intro.

A fantastic David Marks impression! :)

It came out easy enough. I took it out before the glue fully hardened.

Finally, someone got it!
Thanks!

Maybe I could put some gears on there somewhere as well -
Just kidding.
I thought about just using the advance lever to lock the carriage by holding it pressed in after it has been advanced, but decided there would be too much precision involved. The locking blade self centres, is easy to make and to operate. Keeping it simple is what I like to do.

It's a premixed finish - Polyshades. This one is called "Special Walnut"

The bowl was a little tricky, in that as the sides flare out, they are no longer 90 degrees to each other. The stock goes in the jig normally, but then I set up to make a deeper cut. After the box joints were cut, they had to be bevel cut on the table saw to fit tight in the corners.
It's hard to explain, and I was going to show how to make it in an upcoming video.

Great little kitchen project. I'd better not let the wife watch it though, she'll want a whole set. LOL!

Nice video, John, as always.

Thanks. It was supposed to be a send-up of Wood Works. Either you haven't seen it or I suck!
Fun to do, anyway.

john, the jig is great as it is but i think you could redesign the advancement lever and comb lock mechanisms to be linked together so the comb lock dis-engages and re-engages automatically when the advancement lever is moved.

Nice project, how did you make the bowl in the picture?

i haven't given it much thought but it seems that a linkage could be put in to connect the 2 parts. i agree, simpler is usually better but sometimes a little more complexity can provide exponentially more convenience. if you put up many more vids on this jig, just by seeing it from different angles i may get an idea that is more concrete.

Nice but mine would have to be round! I'll add it to my list.

Excellent. The only thing missing from your intro was a tucked-in chambray shirt. :)

Interesting technique with running a bead of glue along the outside of the joint; I hadn't seen that before.

How hard was it to remove the tape from the inside?

Probably using too coarse a blade. 20-40 tooth blade works well for framing and general cutting but rips the heck outta plywood and thinner stock. Use a finer tooth blade for finer cuts in plywood. An 80 tooth blade works well.
