Donald Trump blasts second indictment over alleged election subversion

Former US President Donald Trump was indicted for the second time on Tuesday by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Smith’s indictment relates to Trump’s alleged challenge to the 2020 presidential election results.

The special counsel’s revised charges will navigate the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that gave Trump immunity for official acts.

The Supreme Court recently ruled 6-3 in favour of the 45th president that he was immune from prosecution for acts as president.

Jack Smith’s new indictment will keep the original charges against the former president but reframe the allegations.

The new indictment will focus on Trump and remove allegations against Department of Justice officials and other government officials involved.

The fresh charges clarify Trump’s role as the candidate and his conversations with former vice president Mike Pence.

Smith’s new indictment will also remove a previous charge that accused Trump of wielding the Justice Department to undo his election loss.

It was his duty as president back then to look into it and was also his right as a presidential candidate to challenge the 2020 election results.
