EliteDesk Wifi (M.2 A+E Key Slot) to NVME hard drive

Found this nifty adapter that allows the attaching of an NVME drive to the wifi port/connector (M.2 A+E Key Slot). In the video we test it with G1, G2, and G3 - with a try at G4.

See my part II video for a possible solution for G4/G5

26:22 For the G4, G6, G9 you can get a M.2 A+E key to M.2 NVME Extender, it has a length of flat flex which allows you to relocate the NVMe slot.

Wow. The bios knew what to do with it. That is awesome.

My (65W) G2 works with both SATA and NVME still in place! I've not seen any of those e to m key adapters with tracks significantly beyond the mounting line of the m-key connector so they can be safely cut/guillotined at the line of the mounting hole for the *adapter* (tin snips work well but heavy scissors, a hacksaw or scoring repeatedly with a trimming knife would probably work ok ...) That leaves a standard 'half-hole', 2230 sized adapter board which mounts normally. Put a small bit of kapton/insulation/sellotape on the capacitor (just in case the rear of the 2230 SSD isn't insulated at the contact point). Because of the extra height of the m-key connector, my Kioxia board lies close to flat. Your options at this point depending on whether you have a floppy tray fitted: (a) A small rubber band around the adapter near the screw fixing point will hold the 2230 securely to it (how some m.2 heatsinks are mounted) or (b) put a small bit of insulation tape on the underside of the floppy tray and screw it securely into position to sandwich the 2230 in position. *WARNING* the lid will not fit correctly if the floppy tray isn't down far enough but the 2230 (or capacitor) could suffer if you screw it down too hard! All it needs is screwing down 'firmly' - the 2230 should be pushed down until it it held against the top of the capacitor and no more - the floppy tray fixing screws will end up only a couple of threads from fully home and secure enough - once the lid is on nothing will move. I'm booting OMV off a little Kioxia 128GB drive whilst running independent 4TB NVME and 8TB SATA data drives within the case ...

Those little m.2 to nvme expansion cards exists also with flex cable - you can put it into tight spaces - like they are two parts interconnected with flex cable. One part is the size of m.2 wifi, second part is the nvme 2280 size "daughterboard". Mine arrived yesterday for exactly this purpose :)

Thank you for uploading the video. I have the elite desk G1, I too installed the NVME drive under the colling fan location. Mine works as a data drive, but NOT as a boot up drive. I had already flashed the Bio and installed the lastest. How can you make it boot up? I already did a copy of my SSD drive to that NVME drive, but I cannot make it boot. Even in Bios, it does not give me the option to do the boot order. What magic did you do???

Didn't you mod the BIOS of your G1 to accept NVMe drives in a previous video? So would this wifi to NVMe adapter even work without that BIOS mod on the G1?

Hello, HMDT. Hey my HP Elitedesk 800 G1 USDT arrived
with an Intel i7 4790S cpu. I have never owned or messed
with an "S" series CPU before. Ever. After cleaning off the old
hardened up thermal paste and a good cleaning then, new
thermal paste and an good cleaning of the fans and everything
else inside, it runs great! Now I'm trying to figure out which graphics
card I can install that's better than the 4600 graphics installed.
Hope you are doing well. Really enjoy your videos.

Those Wi-Fi slots are m-Sata right? Couldn’t you just use a dedicated m-sata drive to get the right fit?

My desktop pc has not WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity but have m.2 slot. Can I use laptop's wifi +bt card to be connected to that slot?

Can the m.2 ssd really boot for windows or Linux?

26 Mbps. write speed? That is slower than an ATA harddisk of 15 years ago! Something is wrong with that NVME SSD.
