I was diagnosed with ADHD this year. I knew I had it all my life as I'm a compulsive buyer, finds it hard to focus e.g. too much stuff happening at once I start to freak out and very talkative e.g. if I know a person very well.

I also find it hard to keep a permanent job. For example I'd be working in a retail place and then all of a sudden I'm told your not good enough as your not up to scratch and you never listen.

Btw- The H in the ADHD usually refers to Internal Hyperactivity... Anxiety.

ADHD do have distinctions, they are the three presentations of ADHD. Predominantly Inattentive (ADHD-PI), Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive (ADHD-PH) and Combined type (ADHD-C). What used to ADD is now ADHD-PI.

And there is a good reason for that.. everyone with ADHD exhibits hyperactive symptoms. Hyperactivity isn't just physical, you have mental hyperactivity too. Things like talking rapid thoughts are mental hyperactivity. As kids grow up, their physical hyperactivity tends to become mental ones.

And on that.. boys tend to be more physically hyperactive, but girls tend to be more mentally hyperactive. Boys tend to be diagnosed at 3 times the rate as girls because girls exhibit the symptoms differently, so don't get caught as easily. Most of the ADHD hyperactive symptoms in the DSM would be more accurate for boys than girls, as they focus more on the physical hyperactivity.

Realistically, the subtype split for ADHDers by gender should be the same. But as girls internalize their hyperactivity, it skews the data, eg, ADHD women are likelier to have anxiety, which has been seen to suppress impulsiveness in ADHDers.

Me in school: quiet, doing a lot of writing (not school work lol.)
Me with family: all over the place. Once I decided to come out of my shell eh? The teacher basically praised me for it, which made me wanna go back to being quite... then later told me to “calm down, you’re too rowdy” I was everywhere, I also had the tendency to get the whole class hyped, and loud...and then she kicked me out of her class, it’s cool! I didn’t need help with my reading anyways.xD I watched a video about adhd when I was in 10th grade I think, and it clicked.. and I forgot about it and put off getting checked for 6 years.. xD I was diagnosed a few weeks ago.. now 22.. Annoying thing, I’m now getting hit with the “did you take your pill?” And my sister said (as a joke) “omg, you’re boring now.” If anything, I’m my own party, pfft! Oh, and I’m also hit with ocd, it’s lit!

My first friend has ADD and I have adhd, I think she said she got dignosed at 7, I didn’t notice she even slightly had it even though I knew her since 1st or 2nd grade, the difference I found was that people with adhd are more talkative and talk fast and not needing to take a breath and terrible memory but apparently people with ADD have the aposite thing but some of the same things but not talkative but still understand and I say ADD has better memory cuz she remembers how we became friends and I don’t, I’m not suprised how we did because she said I just came up to her in line and then our parents met at the pool and I was like, that sounds a lot like me cuz that’s something I would do, not sure if we were in the same class or not but I think we met in 2nd grade

I wonder why there can be such a difference in hyperactivity between add and adhd. I got add and personally its from neuroticism where im to "aware" to take any careless action. I rather daydream than take action. If im somewhere comfortable i feel like i can go hyper and walk/jump around, thinking about stressful things(or interesting and joyful things).

Glad to see you back!!! I just started going to an adult ADHD meetup group and our tribe is awesome! Its so great to finally be around people who understand and don’t judge us for our shortcomings, medication, etc. I. I might even eventually start my own in the future!! I highly suggest going to one if you have any im your area (it was very hard for me to find as they are not common) but we can learn a lot even from the others who are like us.

Research on ADHD was mostly conducted on boys and not girls which is why the symptoms are so much more easily identified in boys

As a girl I was extremely hyper. Because it isn't socially acceptable for girls to act like this, several things happened. For one, no girls wanted to be friends with me. I was also forced to become a very quiet, self policing person, which then caused me to become very depressed and anxious. Girls can be hyperactive or a hyper/inattentive mix. One of the reasons it's harder for girls to be diagnosed is that they're under more pressure to mask their symptoms to conform to societal standards. ADD is an outdated definition

I have inattentive Adhd, I was diagnosed at 27 this year. I wondered for 17 years. I got a promotion 4 placements above me at a hospital last year. All of the things I has put off and felt anxiety working on, spelling, driving (I dont drive), social interactions, processes, stress management.

I got to a point where the denial broke me and I thought I was just stupid.

Medication is helping the quirkiness of the disorder for me.

I do however wonder if I will get my ahit together. I sort of feel the medication helps me focus but Also more accepting if my limitations. I don't feel more confident in the things I do or fears I've developed through mistakes I've made with adhd and having anxiety.

I feel calm and less clumsy. Less flustered.

I never knew a day without droping soemthing le bumping into a door or pronouncing something wrong or sending a group text to someone when it was meant for 1 person. Etc etc etc

Yoi nailed it! Ever changing which throws you of every few years, unless you remind yourself, ADHD is changing. Now at 67 yrs old and caregiving to mom then dad really threw me off. But back with self-care and caring for others. Took awhile to get back to good care for all. Very difficult but did it! Thanks agsin for your encouragement!
