"Give me six months to write a thesis and I will spend the first 5 months and 29 days making sure I write in the most efficient way possible."

The problem with Groff is that it is not as extensible as LaTeX. If I need to do an academic paper in a professor's specific preferred format. I have to use APA, MLA, , IEEE, or etc. LaTeX packages provide layouts for all of that. I've used Groff before for little documents that I might type in Markdown, but I still prefer LaTeX for academics. I would love to use Groff for academic writing as well, but I feel it is less efficient; however, please prove me wrong. A few seconds compiling is better than a few seconds fiddling with getting groff to look right.

Luke how long until you take the final pill and reject the use of window systems and accept full tty asceticism?

It seems self-evident that LaTeX and groff have fundamentally different goals, and which system you choose should depend on what your goal is. If you want a document that looks beautiful on the printed page, you use LaTeX. There is no possible competition. The groff (or MS Word) output looks hideous by comparison. The reason LaTeX spends so much processing time is it is worried about putting exactly the right space between words, sections, bullets, equations, etc., putting page breaks at elegant places, putting line breaks and hyphens at elegant places, making ligatures between certain characters, etc. It is a program by aesthetes for aesthetes. It is truly a "typesetting" program. By contrast, things like groff or markdown are for making logical, extensible documents that are *not* bound to a printed page. Your document could equally well become an HTML page, or a man page, or a printable PDF. It cannot be as pretty because, as authors, we're supposed to be agnostic about how wide our text display is, whether we have page breaks or not, what fonts are available, etc. Frankly, I am amazed and gratified that pandoc even makes an attempt to be compatible with LaTeX; that's not what LaTeX is meant for.

Would the time to compile increase a lot if you had a hundred references? Or would it still be about 4s and 0.1s respectively?

Hi, Luke.
How do you use UTF8 symbols like ąčęėįšų, etc. letters in groff? Thanks!

Do you think groff could fully substitute LaTex? I was so inspired by your videos and I want to learn one between R-Markdown, LaTex and now Groff and it seems as the latter has quite more intuitive formatting, it it worth to learn that and leave the other two for now?

Final update: Okay, so groff uses PostScript as an intermediate when producing PDF, and from what I searched, PostScript simply doesn't allow UTF-8 encoding, so if you want to use certain languages characters, you are out of luck. Gonna stick to RMarkdown then.

UPATE: Shame, doesn't seem to be working with other languages, at least for me. Troff returns "warning: can't find special character 'u00XX_XXXX'" and simply doesn't write them into the file..
What about control over layout/fonts Latex has? Like memoir class, custom headers/footers etc?

Have you tried LaTeXmk? Does the recompiling work for Biber/BibLaTeX and pdfLaTeX (or XeLaTeX/LuaLaTeX, whichever you prefer) automatically by itself
