Eventhough the equation is biquardatic we can solve it in two ways without using the Ferrari's method.
x⁴+2x³-7x²-8x+12=0
• Sum of the coefficients is 1+2-7-8+12=0 Therefore x=1 is one solution.
• The equation then can be factored as

=x⁴+(a-1)x³+(b-a)x²+(c-b)x-c
Then a-1=2 --> a=3
b-a=-7 --> b=-4
c-b=-8 --> c=-12
x³+3x²-4x-12=0 --> x²(x+3)-4(x+3)=0
(x-2)(x+2)(x+3)=0
• The other solutions of x are -3, -2, 2.
☆ The second method is by noting that if x1, x2, x3, and x4 is the solution of x⁴+ax³+bx²+cx+d then x1+x2+x3+x4=-a and x1(x2)(x3)(x4)=e. Here a=2 and e=12. x1, x2, x3, x4 may be ±1, ±2, ±3, ±4, ±6, ±12. We csn try any one. When we find a value that satifies the equation then use it to factor the equation is done in the first method.
