"lost places" sounds so much more beautiful than "abandoned places", and feels so much more fitting. I haven't heard it used before but I'm definitely using it now

I might emphasize your point that in the event you do get caught, forthrightness and common courtesy can go a long way towards lenience. In my case, age has worked in my favor as well. I was in my early 60s when I triggered a silent alarm in a derelict paper mill. I had just mounted my camera on its tripod when the owner appeared out of nowhere and accosted me. One look at my white hair and pricey photographic gear, and rather than bust me, he explained as if to a child how dangerous it was to be inside by myself. He must have thought I'd been left unsupervised at my rest home and wandered away. We parted on friendly terms. I didn't get the interiors I wanted (that time, anyway), but was welcomed to shoot as many exteriors as I wished. Bottom line: BE NICE.

Trespassing is illegal, dangerous and a hell of a fun time.

Start with your neighborhood. A hidden creek, old motel, forgotten street of houses, etc. There are so many avenues to uncover in your own back yard. Great video and excellent tutorial. Also, don't be afraid to ask property owners of abandoned places if you can have a look around and take photos. Most I'm sure would be happy to have their history preserved. Happy Urbexing and keep the history alive. Happy New Year. Let's find some amazing locations in 2020.

When you're starting out, explore your city first, then other cities around your city and expand outward to states and then maybe other countries.

I love this tutorial. I'm considering exploring abandoned buildings, but I didn't know where to start. Now I know just what to do. Thanks!

I started exploring abandoned places back in high school (I'm halfway through college now). At the time I lived in a rural area, but there were a lot of pristine abandoned locations that looked pretty much untouched because of how few people ever came by them. You shouldn't overlook rurex, you'd be surprised what you can find with good observation skills and some time spent driving around with your friends in the middle of nowhere.

All urbexers I've met in person, including Youtubers, have been quite anti-social and very unwilling or useless. I've had far more success on my own. Forums are a complete waste of time and sometimes get outright hostile even when you offer fair participation. Like some kind of childish cliques. If you're up for that kind of nonsense I suppose you can get some great spots. But for me, I don't have the patience to put up with it. That effort can be better put in to researching new places yourself. Great video.

I wouldn't dare doing urbex, but I find it so fascinating. There's something so... narrative, about abandoned places. Thank you to all the urban explorers out there for sharing your adventures with us.

To whom it may concern,
This was a very good guide to URBEX. I think that you covered most of the topics that URBEX requires and this guide is very informative to NEW urban explorers. Keep up the great work guys.

I know this video was uploaded years ago, but I found it while doing some research. I got lucky and found a place that was recently abandoned. I found myself here trying to learn how to get in. Thanks for all the tips!

Have you ever thought of getting a safety harness (or fall protection harness) to have on hand for the really high, difficult explores? I worked in the construction industry and they were mandatory when working over 2 stories. Keeps you from going splat if something does happen - like a rung on a ladder would give way when you're several meters in the air. As with most things, prices vary, but even a less costly one to have on hand for the whole group might come in handy some day.
