What is an ISO File?

Today we will talk about what is an iso file as far as a Linux Distribution goes. You will need to get an iso file to test and install Linux. I have videos about what to do with these files in the following videos so you can follow along with the steps:

Installing Linux from Windows:

Live Key Creation on Windows:

Ventoy:

Mac:
Apparently I don't have a specific video...should I make one? Let me know in the comments.

The live mode is fine and well, but what we need is a cross platform program that tells you your system specs and if your distro of choice supports all of your components.

Thanks a lot man this video is exactly what i needed!!
Just to get this clear, so when running in a live session we can fully test the compatibility with all devices plugged to the pc and the available media codecs in the target OS?
And when you turn the pc off and unplug the usb it will just get back to your old OS normally like nothing happened right??

How do you make sure that the hash wasn't tampered with as well?
You know... If they have the technology to change the ISO you downloaded there is also a good chance that they change the hash as well, isn't there?

*One time boot menu on Windows:* Start menu -> On/Off -> SHIFT KEY + restart
When you do that you get into the windows bootloader that let's you turn off the PC, continue with windows or start from a different device. The USB stick might have different names (Such as "Removable device", "Partition 1" etc.) even it's the same stick in the same port.

Escape usually works for me. It pauses boot at least on both HP laptops I have.

One time boot menu on ASUS ROG machines: Hold the ESC button on your keyboard while powering on.
(I absolutely LOVE that and I think every machine should work that way! It's so super simple and works like a charm)

I have multiple Mac g3, g4, and g5 computers and would like to learn about how to put Linux on Macs, but the drop down above does not list any videos for that.

Well, when I installed Windows the last time (Win 7, btw), it took days to get it installed and all the necessary things added to it. Like, antivirus and such. OK, I could've done it faster, but I like to sleep once in a while. Linux I installed in less than an hour. There you go.

IMHO it's way easier to prepare a USB stick with Linux on Windows (eg. with Rufus (Many options, but Windows only), Etcher (simple, cross platform, but limited options), etc.) than it actually is on Linux

I guess I'm "old school" because I still burn iso's to DVD. I have 2 laptops and 2 desktops with DVD burner/players on them. It's slower doing a live session because it has to keep reading the files first. But other than that it's simpler than a usb

@3:50 Yes, but you can create a bootable flashdrive with this iso image by using a utility program. As soon as you use a Linux distro like Ubuntu or Kubuntu, a program called Startup Disk Creator is included which does exactly that. :)
@11:16 Nah, mechanical harddrives are a little bit dated these days. ;)
@11:52 That is right but it works great for recovering a Timeshift backup. :)

Running an OS over USB.... Seems like a recipe for slowness.
