Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.

Romanian, the official language of Romania and Moldova, belongs to the Eastern Romance sub-branch of Romance languages, which evolved from Vulgar Latin dialects. It is distinguished as Daco-Romanian in comparative linguistics, differing from its closest relatives Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian, and Istro-Romanian. Romanian is also spoken by minority communities in Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, and Ukraine, as well as by the Romanian diaspora. Overall, 25 million people speak Romanian as their first language.

The Aromanian language, an Eastern Romance language, is spoken in Southeastern Europe. Its speakers, called Aromanians or Vlachs, share many linguistic features with modern Romanian, including morphology, syntax, and a large Latin-derived vocabulary. Both languages developed from Common Romanian, a stage of all Eastern Romance varieties. However, Romanian has been more influenced by Slavic languages, while Aromanian has been more influenced by Greek due to historical contact.

The Istro-Romanian language, an Eastern Romance language, is spoken in a few villages and hamlets in the Istria peninsula of Croatia and by its diaspora. Its speakers call themselves Rumeri or Rumeni, and are also known as Vlachs, Rumunski, Ćići, and Ćiribiri. The term Ćiribiri, used by ethnic Croats, originated as a disparaging nickname for the language. With fewer than 500 speakers, Istro-Romanian is listed as "severely endangered" in the UNESCO Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger.

This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.

A couple of examples of the Greek influence over Aromanian:
-02:33: The word for _hallowed_ derives from the Greek version of the Lord's Prayer, *ἁγιασθήτω* > Aromanian *s' ayisascâ*
-03:06 The word for _daily_ derives from the Greek adverb *κάθε* /ká.θe/ = _every, each_ > Aromanian *cathi*
-03:19 The word for _sin_ derives from the Greek *ἁμαρτίᾱ* Koine pronunciation /hamartí.a:/ > Byzantine Greek pronunciation /amartí.a/ > Aromanian *amârtjiili, amârtoshlor*
-03:34 The word for _temptation_ is from the Greek *πειρασμός* Koine Greek pronunciation /pe:rasmós/ > Byzantine Greek pronunciation /pirazmós/ > Aromanian *pirazmo*

Istro and Aromanian are both the dying stages of romance speaking the Balkans. Throughout the ages romance speaking peoples have assimilated into the Slavic majority, with Romanian being an exception.

Dilettantes compare today's common Romanian language with the southern dialects of the historical Romanian language. It's like comparing today's common German with medieval Germanic dialects and concluding that are different languages. Linguists, howevwr, know with certainty that, unlike the italic ones, all four Romance idioms of Balkans are dialects of the same language> the historical Romanian language, because all their innovations in relations to the Latin language are equally found in all four. So they did not evolve independently from Latin, but separated from Romanian language trunk only in the 9th-10th century, after the metathesis of liquids in the south- slavic language. So, the thesis that supports the existence of several Romance language in the Balkans has no scientific basis. This theory appeared around 1950, by order of Stalin, as an absolutely necessary premise for the conclusion of the existence of a Moldavian language. Even today, those who support the existence of an Aromanian language, separated from Romanian language, are nothing more than political activists, or at best, amateurs in linguistics.
