Glad to see more Linux on this channel !
Thanks Alex !

I expected the ryzen to be first in this test. The M2 is obviously slower that the M1 max, as it has only 4 performance cores

2:36 on 2018 Mac Pro 15 inch plugged in and nativity running python3. Crazy how fast and efficient the m chips are. Can’t wait to get mine.

Hey Alex, good job, as always ! I just tried the same mandelbrot test on my macbook pro 14 (m1 pro/32Go/1To)
Native execution (python 3.10.1) : 33 seconds (8 performance cores/2 efficiency cores)
Ubuntu 22.04 thru parallels (python 3.10.4) : 39 seconds (8 cores allocated)
Parallels does a great job !😊

That black screen at the end, scared for a sec. I thought something was wrong on my lap.

It would be great to see the same test but with Ubuntu emulated with UTM. Just curious, how significant the impact on performance would be

You should try Asahi Linux on the Mac rather than virtualization. I wonder how different would the performance be.

Didn’t notice the logo on your left. Nice touch! Hahaha

In case someone is looking for another solution for VMs in Macs, there’s another application (which is cheaper than Parallels and it’s also a one time purchase). It’s called UTM, it’s open source and can virtualization ARM and 86 systems (including macOS)

37 seconds on MacStudio 10 CPU cores (8 performance and 2 efficiency) 😀

I ran the exact same mandelbrot test on my M1 Max 14 inch though in VmWare Fusion 22H2 that just got released, and with ubuntu 22.04 for arm. Python 3.10.4 though which has optimizations. and it ran it at 34 seconds ! The same test ran on my macbook console python 3.8.9 at 36.5 seconds.

Hey Alex. Nice test. Very impressive that the M1 Max on a virtualized Ubuntu can match the x86 machine. Can not wait to see test with a Linux OS installed on M1 Max bare metal. 😉

Create a test between Ryzen machine, Intel machine, M1 Macbook and M2 Macbook about compiling latest 64 bit GCC version with all cores avabible

The fact you're allocating 8 cores on the M2 isn't that too much as the M2 cpu has 8 cores itself and basically you're allocating all available cores to the VM so it will struggle with the underlaying OS ?

I ran the rustc mandelbrot #6 on my M1 max 14 inch both in mac terminal and Fusion 22H2 5.19 kernel/ubuntu arm from vmware. mandel 150000 took 33.1 sec on mac, and 31.98 sec on ubuntu with 5.19 kernel.. thats amazing.
