PROBLEMS with HALO TOP and other 'Healthy' Ice Creams | Registered Dietitian

Halo Top is popular, but this "healthy" ice cream has problems!

---------------

---------------

Halo Top and other diet ice creams are quite popular and there are more "healthy" ice creams coming out all the time. But diet ice creams in general and Halo Top more specifically have a lot of problems. Through their marketing, Halo Top promotes a diet mentality that encourages people to ignore their body's own cues and instead "eat the whole pint." They also promote a good food/bad food way of looking at things and even use moral and religious terms and symbols in their advertising. Even the name Halo Top ties the food to this message about morality. On top of all of that, the idea that we even need diet ice cream is an issue. There's nothing wrong with eating regular ice cream.

I don’t eat halo top because it’s healthy I eat it because I think it tastes good

I disagree with this logic. I don't think Halo Top is a diet Ice Cream but more so a lesser evil in terms of calories. I don't see the harm in showing the customer the calorie count. It's better for someone with no self control to eat a 300 calorie pint of Halo Top ice cream than a 1200 calorie Ben and Jerry's pint of ice cream. I don't get your point, unless someone is disgusted by Halo Top and is only forcing themselves to like it due to the calorie then I don't see the problem.

so i basically clicked on this video looking to see if there was actual nutritional problems with halo top only to find that your just gonna ramble on about psychology and restricting, instead of any actual problems with the ice cream. if it’s a lower calorie option and allows people to feel less guilty while allowing themselves to indulge a bit more, then i don’t see the problem. sounds like ur problem is with dieting and restricting, not the actual ice cream....

The first problem I see, is that you call it a "diet" ice cream. It is just a better alternative to eat maybe once a week. And when I eat it, I do not eat the whole pint.

Halo top is how I diet, while still eating what I want to eat. If I person likes ice cream, tracks their calories and is able to fit it in without going over isnt that a helpful tool?

The biggest problem with Halo Top is the price!🙄

Halo top didn't solve your childhood trauma and eating disorder, therefore it's bad.

Calorie count for an entire packsge is a great idea. Huge number on the front of every bag of chips..candy bar.. and ice cream. Bet if Ben & Jerry's had 1200 on the front people would steer clear but unfortunately they won't even tell us the % of sugar we should eat in a day because sugar is what is making us fat and companies don't want the consumers to know a can of coke has more sugar than we should be consuming per day and they put sugar into everything.

You made some good points I hadn't thought of! My dietitian recommends Halo Top but I assume all professionals tailor their plans for different patients.

you contradicted yourself. people with big appetites need to eat more volume to get satisfied. cutting out real ice cream IS a good thing because ice cream is unhealthy... Being able to eat ice cream everyday and not be unhealthy is a great way to adhere to a diet. Why is it healthy to eat only a small amount of real ice cream. There is no such thing as a "right" version of food you must eat, especially not when it's incredibly bad for you

I prefer to buy individual ice cream cones. I binge if I just have a tub of it. I don't want to restrict ice cream, but I end up feeling sick if I have a tub. I have battled anorexia, and ice cream was always on my banned food list. I know that if I have the individual cones, when I want one I'll just have one rather than feeling out of control and eating the entire tub.

My favourite ice cream is actually a vegan one. It's a Tesco own brand coconut milk based choc ice. It's delicious.

I respect the video but shouldn't the first issue be universal. I mean, all companies encourage people to eat large quantities. It's not just a diet ice cream thing.

I think putting too much emphasis on Halo Top and other companies who are simply just marketing their products well by showing the low calorie count, rather than putting the responsibility on yourselves is the problem.

Obviously it's not healthy but it most certainly is a healthy alternative to "real" ice cream

I don't think this lady has ever tried Halo Top because shed know that it tastes way better than any other ice cream

Who doesn't eat the entire pint? I eat the whole thing with no shame because it's delicious. However, its way better to eat Halo Top, because it has only a 1/4 the calories as say Ben & Jerry's.

I appreciate your perspective on this as a nutritionist, but respectfully, I think Halo Tops advertising is, like any business, focused on making their product as desirable as possible which produces profits. And we as consumers have to be educated enough and disciplined enough to make good choices. We can't blame companies trying to sell their product for our lack of self control.
