The United States military bases in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Syria, have come under repeated attack, including a rocket strike on al-Asad Air Base in Baghdad, as recently as August 5, that reportedly injured seven US military personnel and contractors. The attack came after recent escalation by Israel in Lebanon with the assassination of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shur in an airstrike which killed several civilians including children and in Iran where it has been accused of killing Hamas’ political chief Ismail Haniyeh.
