Let’s not forget that a ‘respect for the dead’ means really different things in different cultures. For us in the west, it’s usually burying them and never digging them up again. For many cultures in the past, and some in the present dead bodies were given sky burials and the bones collected and displayed in the family’s home, or in a common display crypt. Sometimes families would collect the bones on special days and take them for walks around the village or set feasts for them. There is no single way to respect the dead

When I was like 12 we had "go to your parents job" days. My mom worked in a care home for elderly people. On the morning of the first day before sunrise she showed me a man who had passed away during the night. He had gotten up, put on his best suit and laid down on his bed and passed away. It didn't feel weird or gross or scary. It was a calm, solemn experience. It taught me that death doesn't have to be terrible, or gross or scary. It can be peaceful and dignified. You might even have time to prepare.

Here in the US for an indigenous grave we're required to determine the tribe most reasonably associated with it and return the remains for their customs to be honored

When I was 19 my boyfriend and I were hiking along a trail in New Hampshire when we came across an early 90's Toyota Carolla at a part where the trail cross a road. Parked with the driver's side door open we could hear the door chime bonging like crazy. Upon getting to the side of the car we could see a woman slumped partly to the side. She was dead. From an apparent heart attack she'd gotten to the shoulder and opened the door as if she was going to get out (she probably felt quite ill) and just passed in that position. We just stood there in silence, wondering what to do. This was spring, 2001 and cell phones were still something of a luxury item. So, we decided to stay with her until we could flag down a passing car. Being a bit stunned ourselves he found himself leaning on the open door to the point where it closed. Being an early 90's American market car it had those stupid, automatic safety belts that ran up the top of the door. Upon closing it activated and made her rise up in the seat. I think someone realized there was a dead body there when they saw the pair of us jump above the tree line. Archaeological? No. lol

If somehow my body makes it far enough into the future that someone wants to display it, you have my permission.

The bird's contribution to the topic was invaluable. 🤣

You are right that seeing a dead body can give you a great amount of reflection. When I was in high school I shadowed an autopsy at a hospital and it really changed me. When I was watching it I was in awe.

And it gave me a whole bunch of stories that no one wanted to hear.

I hear putting them in the British Museum is a time-honored tradition.

You said we’re all going to die then a bird shat on you? There must be some significance to this.

3d scan it and store that digitally. Sequence the DNA if possible, store that digitally. Make a time capsule for that and keep it somewhere.

Use the remains to feed birds, so they can crap on your head.

Leaving in the bird part...that is ONE of the reasons why we love you.

I love how the Ancient Roman lass was given a reburial and attempt at a respectful funeral and headstone after being found in London whilst the Gerkin was being built.❤

In Magdeburg they found the coffin of Queen Editha from the 10th century a few years ago.
They retrieved all the other materials in it (cloth, bugs, little grave goods), examined the bones, and then put the bones into fresh cloth into a newly designed coffin and reintombed it in the cathedral.
The other remains from the coffin were analysed and are in a museum.

One could say she was robbed of her belongings, but I think it was the best course of action. Showing respect to the human remains while keeping the things that are interesting for science and history.

Once the burial RITUALS are completed and the body has been committed to the earth it’s my belief that any subsequent exhumation and display of the remains is acceptable, (provided it’s more than a week since the burial, , obviously).

P.S. regarding the guano count yourself lucky that pterodactyl’s are no longer with us.
