Why Did Japan Keep Fighting?

There's a middle ground between total victory and total defeat, a negotiated peace. That's something that was technically on the table all the way up until Japan's surrender in August of 1945. As casualties mounted across the Pacific, Japan was holding out that the Allies would want to leave the war before Japan was forced to.

The military class was perfectly willing to throw every Japanese citizen into the meat grinder if it would bleed us dry to the point of negotiation, even after the atomic bombs. I think only the emperor's influence saved us all from a catastrophe.
