Record amounts of sewage dumped into English waters

Sewage spilled into England's rivers, lakes and coasts for more than 3.6 million hours last year - put another way, that’s 400 years of poo.

The first full year of data, from all storm overflow monitors, show that although the number of spills was slightly down on 2023’s figures, their overall duration increased.

The Environment Secretary said the figures were 'disgraceful', while the water industry called them 'disappointing'.

if they'd spent £60 billion on infrastructure over the last 30 years instead of giving £60 billion away to shareholders, then maybe we wouldn't need bill increases now. If bills are going to go up then the companies should be renationalised so we know none of those bill increases will end up going to shareholders again

For the life of me i do not understand why we Brits arent seething with rage and on the streets every week protesting? The sewage, the water companies, the PPO contracts, the state of rail, and on and on. Placid little pups while wade in sh*t.

Yorkshire Water really are shameful. They've been covering up problems with the sewer network locally, here in Sheffield for as long as I can remember.
