I know what’s inside there. Firstly this wasn’t really a sewer system however it’s a stormwater management system, what you’d expect to see is every few meters manhole covers and lateral pipes that join into that main drain, and it will shrink smaller and smaller

(the diameter of the line will be getting bigger to hydraulically accommodate the water quantities with more and more lateral pipes the closer you walk to that gate)

Not a sewage tunnel, it's stormwater culvert. You wouldn't want to be exploring a culvert used for sewage, it'd be gross af. I'm still curious where that culvert goes, did you really walk 'miles'? As a civil engineer it's hard for me to imagine it being budget-friendly to build such a long culvert instead of a simple ditch unless you're in a densely populated area. Also, when you lifted the grate and asked "is it supposed to be that easy, " the answer is yes, it is supposed to be that easy! That metal hinged grate is designed to lift up in case debris get stuck behind it. This prevents the culvert from getting blocked up.

my friends and i used to crouch through one of these behind a park by his house. it opened up into a sort of hidden area. we used to smoke and drink there. one of those places to go "with the boys" just like u guys are hanging out rn. that was over 10 years ago. ❤

Not that you care but this isn’t a sewage tunnel, it’s a runoff storm drain. Sewage would have constant water and probably smell pretty strong, while in this instance this is dry because there was no water or rain.

When I was younger there use to be a drainage tunnel that was smaller than this one and made out of concrete that we would crawl through everyday because it was near our school.
