The Coyne family is already reaping the benefits of their brand new accessory dwelling unit!

Built for their son that's fresh out of college and his childhood best friend, this above garage home is the perfect example of how an accessory dwelling unit can bring so many advantages to families.

Tom and Kate knew this was something they wanted to do for their son to help him gain his independence. They thought about doing a garage conversion accessory dwelling unit but being the crafty builders that they are, losing their garage turned workshop was out the question. Building a standalone unit in their yard wasn't feasible either, so the final and best option was building their accessory dwelling unit above their garage!

Designed by Victor Gutierrez of Metro D&C Group, this two-bedroom, one-bath unit clocks in at 650 square feet and sits perfectly over the garage so that Tom and Kate don't have to worry about hearing stomping around in their main home. Their designer incorporated space for a full washer and dryer and extra-large windows, making it feel more spacious.

To finish off the accessory dwelling unit, the couple tracked down used furniture around the city and transformed them into beautiful cohesive pieces using Kate's refurbishing skills!

Since completion, the family has enjoyed several get-togethers in the new home and can't get enough of how much they love their new unit.

I know cost is based on location, but I do wish more of these videos would go into the actual costs to build. We're looking to build an ADU and it's harder than I realized to find ballpark numbers on what we should expect to pay.

In my 40s, and I did the same thing. That is to say it has been different phases. Lived away for the most part in my 20s, studied at different universities. Did not have much money at the end of my studies. Me, my sister and mom, lived like one "happy" family in the house, until my sister built her own. Then, the house got renovated. After a while I contacted the same carpenter, because I had managed to save up some bucks. He suggested renovating the basement. Built bathroom and kitchen and staircase up to my bedroom. Paid for it in cash. Then I moved once more, to study even further. Came back, were somewhat happy with the new facilities, but wanted more. Managed to save some more. Built a detached garage with a living space on top. Took quite a while with all the bureaucracy, but finished the project eventually. Once more managed to pay all in cash. Must have spent more than 230 000 dollars on it all, considering the inventory as well. Would estimate it to be around 1500 sq f. all in all, if you account for the space for car as well. People would probably choose to live in town houses with strangers, but I would much rather live wall to wall with my mother than some of the idiots from my neighborhood to be honest.
