We are seeing a similar conversation with the design professions too. Really curious about how the next few years will look in music, art, and design

Thanks for this. I largely agree with you. AI gives us more tools. I can see it replacing canned music, and low quality soundtracks, much as the voice to speech apps replace low quality narrators. I can also see AI being used a lot to sketch out musical ideas quickly before they are put into a final form by hand.

A.I. can easily understand notes and what music is, but it has no concept of emotion. In other words it can easily compose a song for a band; but it comes down to the performance and interpretation of the actual song. The interesting thing about all of it is; each individual person has a completely different perception of the world around them which is why there are so many different types of songs / music, and why one person might enjoy listening to the same song / band over and over again; or instantly turn it off as soon as they hear it.

Good points, I didn't have thought about somethings you've said in this video.

The big question that keeps me up till 3am too (😄) is where we go a species when the lines of fake / real get blurred beyond the point of recognition.... or even more worringly... beyond care. It feels already like this is in full swing on social media platforms with faked videos & online algorithms. As far as music goes I guess initially it will become its own genre and people looking for the next sonic thrill will blow the scene up and ultimately push it forwards to the point that it assimilates itself into the sound of the future. Im really intrigued as to weather fully AI muisc can really hit deep & capture the soul.... or just be an invention to marvel at.

My husband, who passed suddenly 1 year ago, was a professional bluegrass musician from 12-age 21. Then we met at one of his gigs actually, finished college and got married in 1989. He was fond of saying, back in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s had the best MUSICIANS overall because it was pre-MTV and it didn’t matter what you looked like-you had to be able PLAY.
Anyway, we were married 33 years-and as the years went by, techno music came about-but when the internet came about in 1993 or 1994, he always searched for musician driven bands. We were all about the Blues, classic rock, bluegrass, Union Station with Alison Krause, etc-and they had to have real musicians. Later in life, You Tube became a thing, and he was always searching for underground bands who were working themselves to death but they were always true musicians. Our younger daughter, now 29, was also a band Her degree in Music Education is a teaching degree, so again, it was all about who played the best got 1st chair, got the solos, etc…
He never strayed from that path of they must have TALENT. Billy Strings, Don Henley, his good friend Timmy Crouch (he won the Arkansas Fiddle Championship so many times, won maybe 10 years in a row, and he was so much better than the rest they retired him from that competition. I would say that I strongly feel there will always be an audience for talented musicians.

I love your take on this. I've actually considered using AI to write music for me to do vocals over, but I'm on the fence. Lately I've been leaning towards one of those modules you've mentioned that will help me with my chord progressions and stuff. See, I'm a recently disabled person who's trying to use music as therapy. I have lyrics written for many songs already, and I'm constantly working on my voice, but I could never be a performing singer in a band because I have working memory issues and I would forget lyrics to my songs on stage. Producing the music then making Youtube videos not only gives me total independence and creativity, but also allows me to have cuts or breaks rather than performing it in a single session and forgetting parts or crossing words. I have minimal music theory knowledge so far, as I was actively discouraged against pursuing music when I was young, and learning is very hands on for me so I'm looking at getting a keyboard to help me learn it all better, plus to be able to play it for midi controls when creating music. Until I can get my keyboard and music theory better, everything I create sounds extremely amateurish or the chord progressions give the wrong vibe, so that's why I'm considering to use a tool like that, if I can release some music it would not only do wonders for my mental health, but who knows, maybe my friends sharing it would catch on and I could get some ad revenue or something down the road, which would just go back into my slowly growing home studio. I seem to be ranting, but again thank you for your input here. As a person who's contemplated it's usage hearing input from pro's past or present has huge value.

My friends and I were just on chat gtp or whatever and we had it make a song about a purple sausage in the style of Johnny cash.... And it was incredibly funny

It'll help in some genres and in others not so much. Stuff with a lot of feel and touch like groovy progressive djenty stuff comes out horribly when it's just programmed and AI would produce something similar for the foreseeable future. Things like mainstream rap that tend to use very simplistic beats with consistent loops, accents, etc will be very easy for AI to produce and is likely already being used commercially today. It's just another tool that will have its use cases. I don't think it'll necessarily help or harm the industry, it will just be.

There is so much misunderstanding about AI art generators, most notably how everyone call them AI. It's not human sentience based intelligence, it's much more like the emergent intelligence one would see from a colony of ants or a bee hive.

If your music is so formulaic and derivative that it can be easily and accurately imitated by these music generation algorithms, then sure, you're in danger of losing your job as a composer.

If your intent is to explore sound space, express emotion and lived experience, real or imaginary, then you've got some time to go before AI could even touch your space. In this case current AI would just be another tool in your creative arsenal.

Great conversation Geebz.
I can see AI as as a tool that helps small teams of creatives get their product into the world faster. An example might be a small indie video game developer who may be producing games on a small budget while also working another full-time job, raising a family etc... and might look to AI to fast track the creative process. As a starting point they could get the AI to smash out some concept art or music tracks, then dedicate their precious time refining it with their own personal touch. Even if the AI output is rubbish, at least they have something to work with instead of a blank canvas.

My concern is: How many people can plug any amount of music into an artificial intelligence, and eventually receive a cool riff that they like, and that becomes the song writing process.
From now on, we might never know for sure, if part of a song was the result of an AI experiment, or if it came from a human and further more, does it matter?

Edit: Quickly elaborating on the idea...
The music that might come from an artificial intelligence program could inspire the musician to record something they heard from the AI.
It's not that the AI is recording music that you listen too; obviously that would lack emotion.
The thought is that an artist could help draw ideas from the AI, that they normally would never have been introduced to.

Like what you said on the performance of music, I think that A.I. will continue to take great strides in copying the music itself, and knowing how to write the notes, the chords, the lyrics, the rhythm, the data, etc...; but there will always be the aspect of human interaction with music.
Live shows, memorabilia, media presence, there will always be a need & want to actually see and interact with the bands you love to listen to. Music came about from culture, not as a need/want to experiment with sounds. And culture is nothing without the human aspect.
If you ask people what they think of when you say a popular bands name, or of an iconic moment in music history, chances are that they'll think of the band member(s) first, or at least, _as well as_ the song/album itself.

I was trying to think of a good way to say it simply, and I kept rolling around the idea that a star is often remembered more than just the music they created (which isn't always the case...) but actually, there comes a time where the rockstar/pop idol/music icon stops being just the music they produce, and becomes the image of their character.
Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry
Elvis
Whitney Houston
Michael Jackson
David Bowie
Prince
Ozzy Osbourne
Bruce Dickinson
Beyonce
Eminem
Britney Spears
Adele
So many others, and i've only mentioned individuals. When you think of the bands themselves, the image that's created in your head, and what the general public really cares about may differ, but to so many people out there, the people that created their favorite music is just as important, if not much, much more than the music that those people created.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and making this video. When I hear many people talk about AI dismissively, they tend to be talking about current AI technology or past AI technology, and not what it will be. It is hard to comprehend how AI will likely be changing or lives because we have never as a species expeienced anything like it before, and referencing the impacts of previous technology are not analogous because it will be something completely different. AI tech will continue to get better and better, and by the time we have General AI these conversations about AI creating songs, pictures, and college essays will seem trivial compared to the huge ways it will have changed our lives, for better and/or for worse. It will be transformative in a way beyond how personal computers or phones have been in the last 75 years or so, and likely beyond the impacts of the industrial revolution. It might not happen within the next decade, but it will happen within our lifetimes. As far as AI being able to create art, I think we will find that it will be able to make new art that is moving to us, and makes us feel, and inspires us. There is no reason why it wouldnt be able to do this. We like to think we are special in this creative ability, but thats because humans have never encountered anything else that can do it equal or better than us yet. But make no mistake, we will be surrounded by it. Thats will be before we start to see the true impact of AI.

Boy... I remember studying the DX7 & MIDI in 1983 in my 1st class in Electronic Music. Cutting edge stuff. I tell stories (people now leaving the room 😒). My daughter, 27, being a composer/musician, laughs at me now & asks "...did they have these when you were young...back in the olden days?" Yeah

cant help thinking this is a dig at electronic musicians - still cant get my head round why there is such a stigma against it over the pond

Record labels would love for AI music to become very popular. They would not have no artist to pay. Make all the “music” in house and keep 100% of the profits.

What makes music beautiful IMO is that you can feel when someone pours their heart and soul into it. Whatever the genre is (mostly why metal is my favorite genre) so I highly doubt an AI could reproduce something similar in the end. Maybe AI would thrive in pop music though
