Water was boiled inside the metal drum. This filled the space in the drum with gaseous water. The drum was then sealed. As the gaseous water in the drum cooled, it condensed back to a liquid. Thus, the gas pressure inside the drum dropped. Air pressure from outside the drum remained the same, however. The difference in pressure inside and outside the drum was enough to crush the metal!!
