Ancient Greek authors believed that Mende was used as a base camp for giants before battle, and as palaeontologist Evangelia Tsoukala has been finding out, it's clear to see why.

In recent years, she and her team have been excavating a site in Mende that contains huge bones that the ancient Euboeans could have easily believed belonged to these mythical giants. But who, or what, did these gigantic bones really belong to?

This clip was taken from 'Greek Myths: True Stories' (2010)

It took her 20 years to convince people these were mastodon bones and not giant humans? That's a sad testament to how far we haven't come as a species..
