RTX 2060 Laptop in 2025 - Still Good Enough For Gaming?

This is my HP Omen gaming laptop - this bad boy is a 2020 model, making it between 4 and 5 years old, and it’s sporting a Ryzen 4800H with 16GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, and importantly here, an RTX 2060 Laptop GPU with 6GB of VRAM. Considering I mostly use this for programming these days, I want to know how well that 2060 holds up for gaming, and to no one's surprise, it’s a hell of a lot better than the other older machines I’ve checked out recently! Let’s take a look.

I have this exact model. Upgraded to 40gb RAM for FEA. I’m able to get >100 FPS on all the games I play still but I never meet the 300Hz refresh rate of the screen. This was def worth the money, only complaint is terrible battery life and build quality

If 2060 still killing it, I've might consider buying 2080

Honestly for 1080 its still ok if you get one used for ok price. The stores are still selling 2050 and 3050 laptops which are both worse than 2060.

I have the exact model... I updated the gpu vbios to 115W version and ram to 32gb. It works better than when it was new as i took care of the laptop with regular thorough cleaning and thermal paste change.

Also, I game on 1440p monitor with this laptop 😄

I have an HP Omen 2020 as well, but it only has the 1660ti. Regardless, it's cool to see that these older laptops can still run games at playable fps. I have a much more capable desktop now, but I game on my laptop from time to time when I travel. I do wish I had spent a little more on the 2060 variant so that I could take advantage of DLSS especially with the recent updates in DLSS 4.

I just bought a legion 5 ryzen 7 4800h, rtx 2060, 16gb laptop, i upgraded the storage to x2 1tb m.2 ssd's and will double the ram in the future. But it plays elite dangerous and world of warcraft well which is what i want. Coming from a ryzen 5 3500u apu for gaming. Its massive upgrade

Hi, I also have an rtx 2060 laptop at this day and age. Tbh, I don't have the money for an upgrade and I still would stick to a gaming laptop and if I had the money, I would probably just wait for the 50* series. I still have my legion 5 w ryzen 7 4800h and rtx 2060 and planning to upgrade to 32 gb ram. Legion laptops are known for using the highest tdp available for the gpu, does this mean I could get better performance in these games? I still didn't tried them coz I'm afraid my laptop would explode but I with this I can assume I would have at least playable experience with triple A games. I played spiderman on this thing but I guess it's an optimised game given that it's running on a ps4. I also play the new gen nba 2k25 on this thing and still holds quite well. I guess I'll stick with this for the next 2-3 years

I have a Legion 5 version of your Omen.
It was the height of the Video Card crises, and I needed to replace the GTX780ti in my 2015 Skylake PC.
I decided to go a new route, by getting a Laptop instead.
I was kinda a PC Snob, and I wasn't thrilled with it only having an RTX 2060 (Most reviews on the RTX 2060 at the time were, "meh")
I was expecting my Laptop to be a compromise, and I would have to rely on my other PC, using a Ryzen 1600 & GTX 980ti, if I wanted to game anything difficult.
LOL, I love this Laptop, and use it as much as my upgraded PC (Now with an R5-5600&RTX3060ti)
My only thought is to upgrade from 16 GB to 32GB of RAM.

The WiFi card should be very easily and cheaply replaceable. I upgraded a very old 3rd gen Intel laptop with a new Intel AX210 WiFi card can it works and added bluetooth as a bonus.
Yes it was that old it didn't have bluetooth, think it's a 2013 machine, still works OK with the SSD and 12GB RAM upgrades but was getting a bit limited.
Got a Legion 5P with 4800H and 2060 now so very similar to your Omen but I miss some things on older laptops like optical drives and a removable battery.

Still seems capable enough. The concept of gaming on a laptop is still very odd to me, however. Maybe I'm weird, but I buy very cheap laptops for on-the-go duties, and run a beefy DIY desktop PC for all my heavy duty (and gaming) needs, stuff I only do at home anyway. Whenever / wherever I need a laptop, it's for email, getting plane seats / boarding passes, web browsing for a restaurant, a little Youtube, a little word and excel; a tiny ultra-thin potato does that just fine. Gaming is never on the to-do list for me when it comes to the laptops. In fact, a laptop is the only use-case I have for Apple products; their Macbooks are pretty awesome for having seriously good battery life, and excellent portability / light-weight. That's more than I need on the go, honestly.

Hey! What to do with old laptops if not selling them to others?
(Diy Perks did a similar video but it was destructive to laptop. And those laptops are a decade older than the ones you are posting about)
