Although Libre Office is also free, updated and hence more advanced than Open Office.
One plus point is that Open Office takes lesser space. So if your needs are basic and want have some space, you can go for Open Office.

Apaache is great that its free. In the spreadsheet its not as good as Microsoft it crashes all the time too so set auto save to 5minutes, nothing worse that a page of formulas and calculations and it crashes. It is not rteliable, that is balaoney. BUT I want to know something . Word processor. Despite this after a while you learn how to manipulate it. After setting up the page I set the margins and paste in the text from notepad and there are all these gaps in the text. Which is so annoying. Why cant it align the test. Please advise.

Apache OpenOffice was not actually updated for 9 years!!! Look at the Brodie Robertson's video for details.

I think OpenOffice 4 is very usable and has all the feature that most people would need. The one thing that is actually terrible is the documentation; specifically the Developer's Guide to create extensions. It is absolutely useless and unorganized. You click on one link and it takes you to another page which tells you to click on another link to yet another page, on and on and on. And the Print in PDF feature prints the useless page that it took me to. I have to use the Programmer's Guide for StarOffice (which became OpenOffice) from Sun Microsystems from 2007! LibreOffice (a sister project) has a much better/usable Developer's Documentation.
