Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol

Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls is regarded as one of the great Russian novels, and is one of the few Russian novels I actually like. Regrettably, it remains painfully unfinished after its author burned the manuscript in a fit of pique.

I'm not wild about novels without plots. I believe plot is the most underrated part of writing. They are difficult to think up, then deliver. 1990 [Nick J]

Very nice review! This book I read when I was in my 20s, it was really my introduction to Russian literature. The particular copy I still have in my possession, it's actually a very old translation in Dutch (I'm from the Netherlands). The book has fallen apart almost as it's a very poor quality print. I'd have a 'new' ancient copy of it but it's nowhere to be found, probably mine is the sole existing or surviving copy of it. I've always loved this Gogol novel as it's basically so quirky.

I hope you don't mind I go on and on oh, I just thought of another Russian book I'd like to read, Gogol by Vladimir Nabokov. It was one of his first books. And another is Lermontov's A Hero Of Our Time translated by Nabokov
