Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol | 3-minute book review | 2021

I read Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol and ended up loving it so here's a quick summary of my thoughts! Its place among the great Russian classics is definitely justified.

Of course, there's a lot more that could be said about the context in which it was written (it was meant to be a trilogy and drawing parallels to Dante's The Divine Comedy) and Gogol's general state of mind (not good) but that's for another time.

Definitely here for a review that starts off with "Gogol was clearly a genius, but he was also a bit insane" 🤣
I'd never heard of the concept of the superfluous man, so thanks for discussing that. It's also helpful to know that this book is meant to be a satire.

Well, I've only read Dostoevsky and none other, do you recommend starting dead souls yet or just leave it for when I'm done with more other Russian literature?
