Is there no adjustment that can be made to account for the converters' "lack of punch"? I'm just wondering if people who aren't used to the "true ssl sound" but who use their ears, aren't able to find a way around the Big Six's deficiencies. If possible, I imagine it would take more time ... but if impossible, it implies that the converters either remove something out of the signal (destructive) or do not add anything to the signal (sterile) ... Which is it? destructive or sterile? I'd imagine that if it's sterile, you could add punch with outboard inserts? I was thinking that that's what would be necessary.

So just in case anyone stumbles upon this the same way I did (searching for SSL Big Six reviews), I just wanted to chime in to say that, despite Stone's reservations, the DA/AD converters on the Big Six are quite good. A-weighted dynamic range of 117 db and THD+N < 0.001%/.0007%. Personally, I think you can get a professional grade recording and mix from this for just about anything other than... idk, classical music? And if you wanted to record chamber music for, e.g., Naxos on this, you definitely could. Everyone should of course follow their own ears, and I recognize that the title says "for me, " so not trying to start a fight. Hope none of this will be taken the wrong way!

could you use the big six just as a summing mixer without the converters?

I’ll keep the Big 6 to link as a mixer, it looks like everyone is and have been switching to RME now for the interface and stability, I’ve got the UFX 3 with P16 and A32 Pro and so far 👌🏼

I’m about to purchase this from Sweetwater, but now I’m having second thoughts. Do you have an example of what you are saying, like what song you can’t get the SSL to sound like, or punch of the drums? Will you be getting a digital mixer instead?

I have a SSL 12 and just got the Big Six. As far as i know the SSL 12 has really clean conversion. I sometimes record Vinyls and I like it that way. I would not say that there is a character to the conversion and when you think about it thats how it should be. There is a test on youtube where someone resample 100 times with the ssl and some other interface and compares the character of these converters.

I agree with the converters. I stay with my SSL Six, full analog, enough for tracking and mixing busses. I use Neve 88M converters, it sounds great.

Im for sure not selling mine lol…
Of course the new interfaces cool like the mt-48, rme etc but if i was to sell it i would get either a lynx or prism but until then im running everything thru that 6 like a champ lol

It appears they missed out on letting people switch out the converter

It seems that everyone is using AKM chips, the ones in Akai mpc are below industry standards, ironically the SSL big six works like a charm with akai in usb compliant mode, I dont think the RME multi channel compares to Burl, Lavry, Mytek, Cranesong, the Neumann 48 however is interesting, it has more of open sound. We are screwed as engineers, we basically need to cough up the big bucks for conversion. The RME two channel, the new ones are very good, but we back to 2 channels again, it would be better if SSL just give you the AES ports, or ADAT then you in a different world, RME clock is the best when you using USB or AES pro card.

I have the Big six, Small 6, UC1, UF8, UF1, SSL 2, and SSL 12 along with other gear of course. I will not sell any of it, I use the Big Six to sum along with the SSL plugins and use Dangerous Music Convert 2+ for mastering converters, works like a charm.
