Lesson on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Pathogenesis and Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis, Subtypes, and Treatment. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common gastrointestinal disorder that causes recurrent and chronic abdominal pain that is associated with a change in bowel habits. IBS is associated with a variety of conditions including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and major depressive disorder. The etiology of IBS is not entirely known; however, there are likely issues with gastrointestinal motility and visceral hypersensitivity. IBS is diagnosed via history and with the aid of the Bristol stool chart and Rome IV Criteria. Furthermore, IBS is categorized into several subtypes as well. The treatment and management of IBS includes lifestyle changes (dietary changes, fiber intake, psyllium) along with some medical and alternative treatments, which we describe in this lesson.

Does anyone think IBS is linked to mental health? For myself, when I am nervous/anxious/stressed, it all goes to my gut. With the connection to mental health, when you are nervous/anxious/stressed 24/7, IBS is bound to happen for someone like myself when all my stressors go to my stomach. Can anyone relate or anyone feel like mental health plays a role in IBS/gut issues?

This is an EXCELLENT channel. You have done more to help with IBS than any gastroenterologist I’ve ever worked with. They just want to do colonoscopies because they make more money that way. Your information is clear and direct and straightforward. Thank you so much.

What a bugger!!! Everything made so much sense about my symptoms until the very end! I'm 72, and things are getting worse! Nah. Anxiety and stress caused by that must be a factor for me. Brilliant video. Will watch again.

When you have IBS your body floods your bowels with the water in your body and sends it directly to the bowels. This causes you to feel the same feelings of a panic attack: racing heart, dizziness, feeling faint, rush of adrenaline and an urgency to 💩….

I know because I was dealing with what I called “anxiety poops” where every time I had anxiety I needed to poo. But it was ACTUALLY the other way around! The urgency to poo was causing panic attacks!

My dietician put me onto the low fodmap diet and I have had TREMENDOUS improvements. With fibromyalgia and CFS/ME. I still get flare ups, but they are not near as awful as they were before the low fodmap diet.

I am in the reintroduction phase now and having some issues. But I am still encouraged in healing my gut.

Gut health is absolutely critical in mental health.

All of my issues began when I tapered off my prescription benzo anxiety med. I never had anxiety or panic like this until I stopped taking it. It ruined my gut health, thus ruining my neurological health and my brain-gut neurotransmitters.

I got diagnosed with IBS going into my senior year of high school (now a college graduate). However, not knowing at the time, I did struggle a lot with anxiety and depression since I started middle school and only very recently was medically diagnosed with GAD and chronic depression. Plus being lactose intolerant since my freshman year of high school. Knowing that I had GAD and chronic depression before would have been helpful a lot XD. I ended up being put on meds for about 3-4 years, modified my diet, doing exercises like pilates, and taking probiotics when I can. Now I'm having little to no symptoms unless I'm really stressed out and find myself eating foods again I couldn't eat when I first had IBS.

Thank you for this video i am 25 and have irritable bowel syndrome for like 7 years now the first time a lot of mucus came out and i thought it was cancer but with a lot of questions from the doctor i had to answer they said it was irritable bowel syndrome

Sometimes my symptoms just disappear and its like i have nothing but then when i eat something wrong or its getting colder outside the symptoms return its really annoying but with you’re video i start to understand what it is again thank you very much for this video its calms my mind :)

Your vids are helping me understand my stomach issues. As a teenager i had IBS with diarrhea. As an adult it changed to constipation. At 47 ive developed diverticulitis on top of my IBS . been to the emergency room 4 times in the last 8 days . Finally seeing a gi specialist on the 29 of this month .

I have this- IBS-C- now on top of this I am 2.5 years post- RnY gastric bypass- so it would not be stretching it to say I am G.I. handicapped- now have an upcoming appointment to discuss CT versus colonsopty for lower abdominal pain. DIVERTICULITIS/ DIVERTICULOSIS? Yet my Primary Care said I'm in WONDERFUL SHAPE for my age (75)- but then He's only 50ish!

Thanks for sharing! Gut health is so important for preventing constipation!  Indicators of a healthy gut include: colon transit time of 12-24 hours, type 4 stool on the Bristol stool chart, not having diarrhea or constipation, having 1-3 bowel movements per day, and light-dark brown colored stools!
